Check with your college for details.STUDYING FOR THE CLEP ANALYZING AND INTERPRETING LITERATURE CBTIt is very important for you to choose the time and place for studying that works best for you. Some students may set aside a certain number of hours every morning, while others may choose to study at night before going to sleep. Other students may study during the day, while waiting on a line, or even while eating lunch. Only you can determine when and where your study time will be most effective. But be consistent and use your time wisely. Work out a study routine and stick to it!When you take the practice tests, try to make your testing conditions as much like the actual test as possible. Turn your television and radio off, and sit down at a quiet table free from distraction. Make sure to time yourself. Start off by setting a timer for the time that is allotted for each section, and be sure to reset the timer for the appropriate amount of time when you start a new section.As you complete each practice test, score your test and thoroughly review the explanations to the questions you answered incorrectly; however, do not review too much at one time. Concentrate on one problem area at a time by reviewing the question and explanation, and by studying our review until you are confident that you completely understand the material.Keep track of your scores. By doing so, you will be able to gauge your progress and discover general weaknesses in particular sections. You should carefully study the reviews that cover your areas of difficulty, as this will build your skills in those areas.TEST-TAKING TIPSAlthough you may not be familiar with computer-based standardized tests such as the CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam, there are many ways to acquaint yourself with this type of examination and help alleviate your test-taking anxieties. Listed below are ways to help you become accustomed to the CLEP, some of which may be applied to other standardized tests as well.Become comfortable with the format of the exam. CLEP CBTs are not adaptive but rather fixed-length tests. In a sense, this makes them kin to the familiar paper-and-pencil exam in that you have the same flexibility to go back and review your work in each section. Moreover, the format hasn't changed a great deal from the paper-and-pencil CLEP. When you are practicing, simulate the conditions under which you will be taking the actual test. Stay calm and pace yourself. After simulating the test only a couple of times, you will boost your chances of doing well, and you will be able to sit down for the actual exam with greater confidence. One more thing: you're likely to see some so-called pretest questions on the CBT, but you won't know which they are and they won't be scored.Read all of the possible answers. Just because you think you have found the correct response, do not automatically assume that it is the best answer. Read through each choice to be sure that you are not making a mistake by jumping to conclusions.Use the process of elimination. Go through each answer to a question and eliminate as many of the answer choices as possible. By eliminating just two answer choices, you give yourself a better chance of getting the item correct, since there will only be three choices left from which to make your guess.Work quickly and steadily. You will have only 90 minutes to work on 80 questions, so work quickly and steadily to avoid focusing on any one question too long. Taking the practice tests in this book will help you learn to budget your time.Learn the directions and format for each section of the test. Familiarizing yourself with the directions and format of the exam will save you valuable time on the day of the actual test. Familiarize yourself with the CLEP CBT screen beforehand by logging on to the College Board Website. Waiting until test day to see what it looks like in the pretest tutorial risks injecting needless anxiety into your testing experience.Be sure that your answer registers before you go to the next item. Look at the screen to see that your mouse-click causes the pointer to darken the proper oval. This takes far less effort than darkening an oval on paper, but don't lull yourself into taking less care!THE DAY OF THE EXAMOn the day of the test, you should wake up early (after a decent night's rest, one would hope) and have a good breakfast. Make sure to dress comfortably, so that you are not distracted by being too hot or too cold while taking the test. Also plan to arrive at the test center early. This will allow you to collect your thoughts and relax before the test, and will also spare you the anxiety that comes with being late. As an added incentive to make sure you arrive early, keep in mind that no one will be allowed into the test session after the test has begun.Before you leave for the test center, make sure that you have your admission form and another form of identification, which must contain a recent photograph, your name, and signature (i.e., driver's license, student identification card, or current alien registration card). You will not be admitted to the test center if you do not have proper identification. Consult College Board publications (including the Collegeboard.com Website) for details.During the ExamOnce you enter the test center, follow all of the rules and instructions given by the test supervisor. If you do not, you risk being dismissed from the test and having your scores canceled.Finally, the exam will be upon you. Here's what to expect:- Scrap paper will be provided to you for all CLEP CBT examinations.- At times your computer may seem to slow down. The practice tests included in the book helped me to know what to expect on the CLEP exam and after studying 7 days I scored a 51 on the exam!!! 50 is what I needed to pass. Those who take this exam must pace yourself because there is alot of material to read in 90 mins... I think if I would have worked faster on the exam my score may have been higher however what matters is I passed!!! One last tip make sure you allow two-four weeks to study....

I had 2 more units needed and had let several years lapse. I had to appeal for re-entry without going into a new catalog year and requiring a number of new classes. The school gave me one shot and suggested that I take this CLEP test, even though it was a 6 unit test. OMG - pressure! I was a little scared about the test after reading some of the reviews but followed the advice. I have to say that this book adequately prepared me for the test. The practice tests were far more difficult than the actual test and I'm glad about that. Passed w/ flying colors and got that diploma!

Passed this CLEP with 80 (passing is 50). Good way to study. The actual CLEP test was easier than these practice tests.

I recently took this CLEP test using this book as the only means of my study. Unfortunately, I procrastinated and didn't follow the suggested study schedule in this book and only started studying three days in advance. With that in mind, this book is a decent review for the literary terms that you need to brush up on. Also, there are some great examples of all the different types of literature found on the exam. However, the tests included in this book are tough...I didn't pass them. However, when I took the actual test, I passed with a respectable 61. The moral: don't fret too much if you don't do well on the practice test which takes up a large part of this book. If you study with this book, take it with a grain of salt, and don't rely solely on the tests provided with this guide.

I read through the review section on Saturday, took one practice test and scored a 69, read over the literary terms again on Sunday for about 20 minutes and decided to wing it from there. I scored a 77 on the CLEP the next morning! There are many more literary terms in the study guide than you'll need for the exam - just the basics will do. The review section on poetry was intimidating, but none of that info was on the exam. The review section is clearly written by someone who loves to teach about literature, and is more concerned with educating us than with just making sure we pass the test, but it's short enough so just bear through it.

I used this to help my high school seniors practice for the CLEP test and it yielded good results. 49% of my honors students passed and 25% of my academic students passed. Not too shabby!

This helped my daughter with her college classes. I was happy I was able to get them for her to help her out. Thank you.

The three practice exams in the book were MUCH harder then the actual exam. I put off studying for this exam for just under 6 months, but it wasn't really that hard of an exam. I scored in the mid-50's on all the practice exams and got a 70 on the real one. Just know the Literary Terms & Devices, types of poetry writing, and some basic vocab & you will be fine!

I read the korean translation of this book and though I disagree on the author's view in many aspects, I find this book really interesting as well as informative. So I decided to buy the english version of it. Not being american, I can't understand how americans manage to live in their healthcare system. Some radical arguments of the author are surely hard to struggle against.

Richard Allen Epstein (born 1943) is a Professor of Law at the New York University School of Law, as well as associated with the Cato Institute, the Hoover Institution, and the Heartland Institute. He has written meny books, including Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain,Why Progressive Institutions are Unsustainable (Encounter Broadsides),Design for Liberty: Private Property, Public Administration, and the Rule of Law, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 1997 book, "This book represents my sustained effort to demonstrate that the source of our collective anxiety begins with the elaborate and counterproductive schemes of entitlements that live off the illusion of abundance of scarcity. It deals first with the grand question of health care... Alas, this book is not rich in quick fixes for intractable problems."He begins by stating, "The central thesis of this book is that the rules of the game as have just been laid out are more likely to lead to a sensible regime for the reform and regulation of health care than the dominant regime." (Pg. 19-20) He adds, "I think that the strongest theoretical argument in favor of a welfare right in health care, or anywhere else, is one that exploits the wedge between maximizing social wealth and maximizing utility." (Pg. 31)He suggests that "No political system will be able to turn people away once the coverage is made universal." (Pg. 55) Rejecting the notion that "everyone has a right to health care regardless of ability to pay," he asks, "Why is this principle appropriate for health care when it has been rejected for vacation homes and fast cars?" (Pg. 112)He argues that "Pay or play plans invite strategic maneuvering by employers... Employers with healthy work forces will choose to insure, so all the bad risk accounts are dumped into the public sector with insufficient funds to service them. The single-payer system prevents this strategy, but it invites abuse by a government monopoly that can stifle innovation, squeeze individual physicians, and operate in a slow and arbitrary way." (Pg. 188)He concludes with the suggestion, "perhaps we might be better off in a world with reduced costs and enhanced access, even if liability is sharply curtailed or totally eliminated... we need open markets, with fully enforceable contracts, no ifs, ands, or buts, to find the best levels of legal protection against adverse medical outcomes." (Pg. 416)Thought-provoking and controversial as are all of Epstein's books, this one is well worth reading, particularly given the renewed importance of health care in the current political debate.

A fiercely libertarian roommate of mine gave me this book to read, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was about more than health care. The beginning is actually a good primer on common law, and an effective encapsulation of the philosophical foundations of libertarian thought. Epstein effectively cuts through the platitudes that have been shaping decades of largely ineffective government policy-the sanctity of every single human life, for example-and explains how accepting these commonplaces can lead to results that are worse for everyone.The section dealing with common law mostly discusses the distinction between positive rights and negative rights. Positive rights are those that grant a people the right TO something: liberty, for example, or the right to a decent standard of living. Negative rights give the people the right NOT to have something happen to them: infringement on their person or property, or unfair treatment by another party. Far from being a small semantic distinction (I'm sure all of us can think of how most laws could be stated in either positive or negative form) Epstein shows how positive rights are much harder to enforce, and generally lead to a variety of perverse consequences when we try. The rest of the book-dealing with the Clinton health care proposal, for example-has dated, but is worth reading for the application of these ideas.Epstein writes an elegant but dry sentence, with occasional jargon, and except for the times when he gets passionate, the book moves along at a stately plod: I had to reread several sections to make sure I understood them. In other sections, however, Epstein maintains that having government welfare discourages people from taking care of their own health, because they now realize that they have a safety net.Now, I don't understand how a government safety net would discourage people from doing this any more than a private safety net. Epstein could argue that a safety net based on private charity would be more selective, but in my experience this isn't true: a church asks fewer questions than the government. The biggest problem with Epstein's argument is that, if taken to its logical conclusion, it's opposed to the idea of any effective charity at all: anything that tells people that they have help if something bad happens to them will, to some extent, discourage them from trying as hard as possible to avoid that catastrophe.And not only charity, actually: this idea is technically opposed to the idea of many kinds of medical treatment. Doesn't the existence of angioplasty make people less worried about watching their weight, in the same way that the effectiveness of AIDS medication has made people less worried about contracting HIV? But I hardly think that anyone would want to stop research in these areas, even though the illness is - in most cases -the "fault" of the patient.Now, a world where everyone is completely responsible for his or her own lack of foresight might be better than the world we live in, but I doubt that many of us would be confident enough in our own judgment to opt for it - which is probably why we leave it up to the government, despite the usual results.

Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. He sees for man one singular hope:the Christ impulse; a living practice of personal human spirituality drawn from the occult implications of the Christ phenomenon. A mystical Christianity that demands personal response from the individual as an individual all his life, and just as particularly in death.Steiner's position is that the very evolution of our species is tied hard to Christ, Christ's message and death, and our understanding of what actually happened at Golgotha.The dogma and ritual of the churches and varying religious ideologies do not address the mystery fully enough if at all Steiner says because their time has long passed, that man is due for an evolutionary morph in consciousness that the dogmas cannot possibly address. His work is a form of initiatory process; one must struggle through it, rather as Christ struggled under the cross; wrestle with Steiner's revelations, somewhat as Jacob did the angel. I have read this book repeatedly and each time I understand it more deeply.Steiner starts with a description of the physical body then progresses to the more subtle bodies as the etheric, astral bodies and the spiritual Ego which leads to an understanding of the human body in its totality. This is all written methodically and systematically. To read Steiner requires full attention and should be read slowly and consciously. It is an effort well worth making in order to acquire an understanding of the spiritual world and how it interpenetrates the physical. Steiner writes with a clarity and insight given to few. He was a true clairvoyant and wrote and lectured about the Universe and evolution of Humanity going back before Atlantis. Just the act of reading Steiner transforms the reader. It takes time to assimilate this new way of perceiving the world as well as ourselves but well worth the effort.Rudolf Steiner was the founder of the Anthroposophical movement in Germany in the early 1900s.He was a most gifted and inspiring teacher and was responsible for the advent of Waldorf education and Biodynamic farming among other new and more enlightened ways of functioning in the world. He has been my spiritual teacher since the early seventies and certainly has changed my life through his books, lectures and workshops. Theosophy is an excellent start.

My first book from Rudolf Steiner I read when I was 16. Now being 50, I still read it from time to time as it is one of his foundational books. Love it!

A fine piece of work. Steiner provides a clear and persuasive explanation of his construct of the human condition. How we human beings can work positively for self-development and effective support for the needs of the world is nourishing food for thought.

This book was made by scanning an original version and then binding the scanned copy. They say they do this because it keeps the cost down which is fine by me. The problem is, if you have ever scanned a document you will find that the words in the scanned document often get jumbled and the document has to be edited so the sentences can be corrected. THEY DID NOT EDIT THIS BOOK. I REPEAT, THEY DID NOT EDIT THIS BOOK. They say they did not edit this book so that they can keep the cost down. I DID NOT FIND THIS OUT UNTIL AFTER I BOUGHT THE BOOK AND READ THE DISCLAIMER THAT IS WRITTEN INSIDE. Reading Rudolf Steiner is complicated enough but try understanding a book where the sentences are jumbled up and make no sense. AMAZON SHOULD STOP SELLING THIS PARTICULAR VERSION OF THE BOOK.

I recommend to all seekers for truth about themselves. I have most of his books. one of my favorite authors

This is a review of the General Books edition of Teosophy, and not of the content of Teosophy itself. The General Books edition (at $8 here on Amazon) is obviously a scanned version of the book, with no apparent proof reading after the text recognition (OCR) was done. The result is a book with lots of typos, and some pages are pure garble. Reading Steiner is hard enough, so stay away from this edition unless you totally have to save the few extra dollars to get a read-through version.

UGH, why didn't I read the other reviews before I bought this edition? This book is FILLED with the most bizarre typesetting errors you can imagine, which makes it incredibly difficult to read. Sometimes you really do get only what you pay for. I will order another edition, but never again buy a book published by General Books LLC.

This a a book of what happened to the Jews who lived through their horrors, only to find there is no ‘home’ to return to. Finally freed from the camps, these people now must make their way home, only to find there is no home anymore. For many, there is no family or friends to return to. No jobs, or any way to make a living. Many encounter the lingering hatred of the Jewish people when they arrive back to their cities and villages after they have lived through the horrors of the camps. Now often alone, these survivors must figure out how to continue, pick up the prices, and with nowhere to go. Their family and home that they have longed for, no longer exists.

Started to read this book. I love true stories, but this one of course is a messed up and dramatic one. There is SO much garbage out here in Illinois-Cook County-Chicago/Chicagoland. Back in the day (period this book was based on and before) as well as now.It may not be as open as it once was, but there are still goings on that should not be. Seems our politicians are the new gangsters. This book allows one to look into the past and get a partial glimpse of the chicago outfit or organized crime and government corruption. THIS IS ONLY ONE STORY OR A PARTIAL GLIMPSE OF WHAT WENT ON!!! Many more stories to be told and many other books out there with similar subject matters.Personally, the largest issue I have with the subject matter is the government corruption. The crooked cops, attorneys, prosecutors, judges, and etc. It is a partial glimpse as to what we have come from here in Illinois, County of Cook, and Chicago - Chicagoland. I don't know about the current state of organized crime here as to the Chicago Outfit, but I do know we have a Ton of issues and corruption is a main culprit. Don't believe me, look at all the Governors we have sent to prison.The town of Willow Springs, Illinois isn't what it was like back during the time of this book. SO, So much has changed. Much of the seediness is now gone. But, the stories I have heard and the things I had seen with my own eyes when going through there several years back. If you are really interested in this town and its partial roots to organized crime, check out the Willowbrook Ballroom near Archer Road and Willow Springs Road, Willow Springs, IL. That goes back to Al Capone.Willow Springs, IL is Not only this story as many have come to believe. Also check out the building of the Illinois Michigan Canal, Saint James cemetery & church 1830(Lemont, IL), the CCCs or Civilian Conservation Corps camp they had in this town, history of Archer Road as an original travel route in and out of Chicago, American Indians of this area, and etc. Good in bad in everything. Don't ever forget that.Get the book for an interesting read. I can't saw how much of it is pure fact, but in reading it you'll get the gist of things. Nice read that may get you into similar books or allow you to branch off into sub categories, perhaps subject matters that I mentioned in the above paragraph.

If you live now or lived near the sw burbs of Chicago, this is a must read. The streets and locations will be familiar to you even if you did not know what when on inside of the buildings. Allegedly, and I ain't sayin' nohtin' about nobody.This book is good because it just tells the story without too much drama. You know, it's just business.Truly a fun read and just a little bit unsettling when you think about what went on around everyone. Gee, I'm glad those days are over, huh?

I enjoyed the book very much since I have friends who were very knowledgeable about the goings-on at the time.

Honest and hard hitting, the story of a man who became a bad guy but always retained a good heart to the end, Mike Corbitt indirectly hurt a lot of people, he intentionally also helped a lot of people too. A cop and mobster. A good cop who did good and bad. You can't applaud Corbitt for all he did, but some of it; the book, while brutal in many ways, depicts a man's life that is a microcosm of the world, and the very fine lines between the very best and very worst that sometimes exist in what life has to offer.Dave Bayer

The narrative is nicely supported by period and modern illustrations and some well-done battle diagrams.The author takes an even-handed and suitably skeptical approach to his topic, dispensing with some of the more exotic assertions about the battles. For this reviewer, he succeeds in providing a fascinating comparison of the Greek and Persian military systems, including why one prevailed over the other in this instance. Well recommended.

An Osprey classic.

Book in great condition

This book gets only two stars from, not because it was a bad book, but because photos, maps, drawings, and other illustrations were missing, survived by only portions of the accompanying caption. Very disappointing. I wish I had bought the conventional version of the book.Text and properly placed illustrations were excellent.I do not recommend the Kindle edition.
