As a very experienced deep diver (mostly regular air) It was great to read an accurate account of what its really like "down there". John captures the feelings so well of immense pleasure see sawing with moments of absolute terror when you know you either did something really dumb ( like going to 350 feet on a single tank) or something just went wrong and you were not expecting such a huge issue to appear out of no where. He captures the fine line between coming back and staying down there for eternity exceptionally well.A great read, worth twice the money!!
Just had to add my five-stars worth! This is a can't-put-it-down book for anyone who loves or is interested in diving. Tons of technical information but also true tales of adventure, exploration, and daring from one who knows what he's talking about and knows how to write it. This book is for everyone from diving dreamer to expert, instructor, or technical diver. I can't wait to read his other books!
This was probably an exciting story in real life, but this book reads like an encyclopedia. The author should stick to giving diving lessons and leave the book writing to someone with talent. Every few pages he launches into yet another boring lecture on the finer points of mixing exotic breathing gasses and how they pass into the human body and then back out again. However, the story of two divers who dive down to 600 feet gets covered in about two pages and most of that is him telling us what they did on the boat while they waited for the divers to return. Yawn!!!
As someone who lived there and worked in the dive industry, I think this book is a really good account of what it was like to live in Sharm el Sheikh and be involved in Technical Diving. This is the best of the author's books that I have read and it has a good, flowing writing style that manages to explain what is a pretty, well technical, subject in clear, easy to understand English.
A valuable read for any scuba diver, especially one who is thinking of more technical diving or recently qualified as one. Its also an insight into a little known activity that pushes boundaries much like space flights or mountaineering. The writing is excellent.
Great read for the avid diver. Lot's insight into the world of deep diving. Too bad Sharm is under threat from ISIS, it would be a great place to dive.
Good read for those interested in such things and certainly for those who dive.
Interesting read. Really takes you deep into the lives of the divers and what it takes to be in thier world.
