Every time I think of Jane Cleland’s book, “Mastering Suspense,” I envision the famous showdown between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan during Star Wars: A New Hope. It’s a legendary scene of dark vs. light; student vs. teacher. Upon seeing Obi-Wan for the first time in decades, Vader says: “I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master.” After reading this book, I feel a little bit like Darth Vader in that duel. Well-taught, empowered, and confident. But hopefully with a little less arrogance and a happier ending in store.I’ve had the pleasure of personally learning under Jane’s mentorship at my MFA program, an experience I esteem highly and cherish greatly. This book is a bit like that: a personal mentorship. Here, Jane has divulged actionable methods for creating better works of writing. This isn’t a book just for mystery writers. She wrote with a wide audience in mind. Whether you’re a memoirist, a historian, or a novelist, you’ll see suspense in a new light. Even better, Jane has provided a masterful process by which you can incorporate suspense into your writing. My favorite sections included exercises you can employ to deepen your knowledge (of characters), expand your settings (and use them to create suspense), and explore nuances regarding betrayal and confusion.Like Alfred Hitchcock once said, surprise is cheap—anyone can do it—but suspense? Suspense is what keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

I have read a lot of how to writing books and this one is in the top seven or eight. Well written, with the added bonus of deconstructed examples, she doesn't just tell you how to build suspense...she shows you. After reading, I applied her methods to the outline of a new novel. Not only was it easy to see where the plot might lag, it helped raise questions that needed answers. Well done.

Outstanding. Like taking a refresher course without leaving the comfort of your home. It is like several workshops condensed into one book. I highly recommend this book for any writer from fledgling novice to seasoned professional. like a breath of fresh air, it will clear out the cobwebs.

The writer Charles Bukowski once said words to the effect that "Nothing teaches you more than failing, and regrouping after your failures." That's definitely true, but that doesn't mean that heeding what others have learned might not save you some time on your own journey. There is some practical advice in "Mastering Suspense," some useful techniques for writing clearer and more readable prose, and also sections on how to keep multiple plot threads under control and in play in the service of a larger narrative without losing sight of either the subplots or main plots.I generally find that if I glean two or three usable bits of info from a "How-To" book, it's money well-spent. Madame Cleland's book met and exceeded my expectations in that regard. The only caveat I would add, though, is that some of the book reads more like a pep talk/motivational speech from a real estate seminar. Other parts are a bit too mercenary for my taste. "Honor your readers" or "Write for your readers, not for yourself" sounds like good advice, and may be, but if there weren't some exceptions to these rules (or writers who didn't create heedless of a lot of the principles laid out in this book) the literary canon would be a poorer place. This is a minor gripe, though, and some of the charts, exercises, and most prosaic bits of advice are worthy accessories to any writer's toolkit, whether you're just getting started or you've been in this crazy game for a long time. Recommended.

This book is chock full of great advice on perfecting your writing. Each chapter is focused and succinct. The exercises are valuable and illustrative. I already had my novel written when I read this book. Now I have to revise it into the novel I thought I wrote, but didn't. Cleland's book will take me there.

Make your writing compelling! Excellent book, excellent information for all writers, regardless of genre or experience. Solid explanations and illustrations of what makes writing compelling--what elements capture and KEEP readers' attention, and keep them turning the pages, as well as how to structure a story that carries the reader (and multiple plot lines) from page to page. The author explains strategies and easy-to-follow methods for weaving compelling elements together, suggesting structures that make the story and plot stronger.Like many, I have a shelf full of writing books--most of which I thought I HAD to have, and then read only the first few pages of before skimming the rest (maybe) and setting aside. I started reading this book, stopped, got up and got a highlighter, started reading again, stopped again, went and got a pen and a notebook, and then read cover-to cover, marking and taking notes. The author explains suspense, structure, and plot--all things I thought I understood--in a way that made me see and understand them (and be able to USE them) in a new light. I'm using that new understanding to craft a stronger story.I highly recommend this book to all writers, and am sure I'll be referring to it again and again. (I just bought some colored flags to mark particularly important sections, so that I can find them easily, and refer to them as I go.)(ps--I did find some of the examples a little odd, and one reference early on that I couldn't make heads or tails of, but that's really a minor wobble.)

Jane Cleland's book uses lots of clear examples and has concrete suggestions for building a plot. While the book concentrates on plot and subplots (more on how to develop a subplot might have been good), she also offers helpful advice for revision and rewriting, especially with different points of view. Many of the excerpts she uses for illustration are quite contemporary, and they make her ideas crystal clear.

i am very disappointed in this book- here is what the "actionable" lessons are1) take cold showers often2) the only breathing method reviewed in the book is the following: breath deeply, exhale deeply- repeat this 30 times and then hold your breath as long as you can-that's it- there's a lot of interesting conjecture and peri-scientific and to be fair, scientific ideas discussed- but the material is so thin on the WHM (Wim Hoff Methods) that it doesn't justify 120 pages- but it mentions over and over all these wonderful breathing methods and delivers only point number 2 abovethere's another piece here- the idea of commitment- but this is so shallowly fleshed out that it doesn't even deserve to be in the titlei LOVE the ideas that this book was supposed to cover- but with so little programmatic instruction, this is one of Dragondoor's poorest efforts in a whilethis subject really deserves more detailed instruction- perhaps this is if you pay for his on line course (which may have some value) but the book is a lousy bait and switch on what really may be an important topiccompared to pavel's books, which are a gold mine of brilliance and insight, this falls vastly short

A readable book with enough credible material to inspire me to try the do it yourself for 30 days to see for myself. If I succeed in completing the 30 days I'll be back to report in an edit and bump the star count up or down. The benefits could be enormous. I hope so and must find out.[Edit] I had planned to use the "do it yourself for 30 days" as a trial to see if I wanted to buy the ten week on-line course. As fate would have it, he put a significant discount on it for Christmas and I went for it. Having reviewed the workbook for the on-line video course I can say that this book has the essence of his method and I am therefore bumping this review to 5 stars. The on-line course has more; winter yoga, exercise and methods for gauging progress which I'm certain will be valuable (I'm not making a sales pitch for him here). This review is for this book and I stand with that first paragraph, The Kindle book or the hard copy when released is a good value and something that has actionable information.

I was greatly disappointed with this book, I was expecting a lot more but it didn't deliver. I am a fan of Hof and received some breathing exercises for subscribing to his email newsletter. The email I received had more detailed breathing exercises than this entire book. I was really surprised by how little material was in fact in the book. He touched upon Tummo breathing and offered nothing more than "breath in and out slowly 30 times and repeat"...that was it. Maybe that's all there is, but it seemed like their could be more on posture, focus etc. The rest of the book is testimonials and links to more books and websites at the end, plus some highlights off his accomplishments. I have received books from Dragon Door Publications before and am no stranger to their selling tactics. I have multiple Pavel Tatsouline books and they are filled with ads etc. At least his books deliver the goods as far as useable material. Hof mentions in the book his autodidactic way of learning yoga, breathing etc. This is an amazing feat but doesn't make for great teaching or detail. Some of us have too have guidance and more detail to truly understand the subject. We are all not as gifted. I feel like the book is a setup to purchasing more products from Dragon Door Pub. This is the first book I have ever sent back to Amazon. The book summary is this:-Take cold showers, start slow and increases the amount of time under the water.- Breathe in and out slowly for 30 seconds and repeat.- the other 324 pages: testimonials, accomplishments, photos of cold stuff and running bare chested in snow, ads to buy more stuff.

I loved the context provided by this "book" about all topics related to breathing, cold exposure, and WHM. Apparently cold exposure is super duper healthy for you! But not much instruction for learning the techniques, besides the absolute basics. I guess you need to get the 10 week course or take a seminar in person for that.

Disappointing. Starts out with 6 pages of "advance praise" by 12 men. Then we get 3 pages of "I am awesome" by another man. Followed by 6 pages of self-glorifying statements like "...I can effortlessly access this 'Mind of no Mind' via intense physical exercise" by yet another man, who incorporates elegant terms like "bitch-slapped" into his description of his own masterful technique. Altogether, an unpleasant and egocentric introduction to what should be a fascinating topic. The book is very brief, short on details as others have noted, and full of not-quite-true statements, such as, "If the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood is disrupted, it will have a strong effect on your intestines." Well, yes, but fortunately we have lungs and kidneys, which maintain appropriate balance in all but the most seriously ill. By the time you reach that point, no breathing exercise is going to rescue you.Back to Amazon it goes.

From the Inside Flap

"There is nobody better than Angus Deaton to explain why our lives are longer, healthier, and more prosperous than those of our great-grandparents. The story he tells is much more than an inexorable march of progress--it has also been unequal, uneven, and incomplete, and at each step, politics has played a defining role. This is a must-read for anybody interested in the wealth and health of nations."--Daron Acemoglu, coauthor ofWhy Nations Fail"At once engaging and compassionate, this is an uplifting story by a major scholar."--Paul Collier, author ofThe Bottom Billion"Magisterial and superb."--William Easterly, author of The White Man's Burden"The Great Escape tells the two biggest stories in history: how humanity got healthy and wealthy, and why some people got so much healthier and wealthier than others. Angus Deaton, one of the world's leading development economists, takes us on an extraordinary journey--from an age when almost everyone was poor and sick to one where most people have escaped these evils--and he tells us how the billion still trapped in extreme poverty can join in this great escape. Everyone who wants to understand the twenty-first century should read this book."--Ian Morris, author of Why the West Rules--for Now"Deaton's account of global advances in health is magisterial. It is especially convincing in disentangling economic progress from technological growth as sources of health improvements. A very big story, this book should affect the way we think about human development and the role of science and science-based government programs. The language is modest and graceful, the use of evidence compelling, and the illustrations highly attractive."--Samuel Preston, University of Pennsylvania"This factual, sober, and very timely book deals with issues surrounding the higher incomes and longer lives enjoyed by an increasing proportion of the world's population. It assesses improvements in conditions that would have seemed almost a fantasy for people living only a few generations ago. Deaton's arguments, written in an elegant and accessible style, are powerful and challenge conventional opinions."--Branko Milanovic, author ofThe Haves and the Have-Nots"This splendid book discusses how, in the last two hundred fifty years, large numbers of people have achieved levels of well-being that were previously available only to a few individuals, and how this achievement has given rise to equally unprecedented inequalities. Unique in its focus and scope, exceptional knowledge and coherence, and careful argumentation,The Great Escape is highly illuminating and a delight to read."--Thomas Pogge, Yale University

Insightful book about the global rise of living standards during the industrial era. Charts a path between the political left and right on where the data supports inferences on economic growth, health and wellbeing, and inequality. Deaton also generally reflects a recognition that economics often serves best by obtaining and analyzing data to demonstrate the impact of particular policies, but that actual policy choices really often reflect considerations of norms and values that cannot be determined by the data alone. However, I agree with many other reviewers that the final section on the ineffectiveness of international aid is a mismatch from the rest of the book. It is the least data-centered of the sections and the most like a one-sided persuasive essay. I think he raises a number of valid concerns and considerations about the efficacy of international aid as it is conducted, but I fail to be convinced by his seeming conviction that efforts to reform how aid is conducted would be fruitless. He comes off as a person who has become deeply disillusioned by development aid and can no longer see the legitimacy of any arguments in its favor. However, his even-handedness and open-mindedness about other economic matters in other areas of the book does mean that I am more willing to fully consider his arguments on this issue than I might have been from someone who had not demonstrated such qualities on other issues.

2015 Nobel prizewinner in Economics - Conversational writing style with enough research background to satisfy experts. This addresses the biggest issue of our time in money & inequality. Deaton has been studying this for more than 25 years. I have been studying this topic for 4 years for a local non-partisan civic organization. If I have one recommendation to read on this topic it would be this book. It lays out the facts and issues I have gleaned from a myriad of sources over the past few years.

This is clearly the most insightful book I've read for sometime. In contrast to so much we read today, this book is optimistic about social and economic progress. It's policy recommendations for developed countries are largely hurried and not very well justified -- all except for one, and that one is very important. He makes a very strong, fact based claim that foreign aide as we think of it is largely wasted. Amelioration of world poverty is just not feasible given the infrastructure of the countries that need it most. Clearly, just writing checks doesn't do it, he claims, despite the good intentions those accompanying those checks. But he doesn't advocate doing nothing. He just advocates a carefully administered program that helps underdeveloped countries, but only if they help themselves first.

Some great economists, which we used to know only through very formal papers, are proving to be good writer. Among them, Deaton excels. It brings very good stories with an exposition that we feel like reading a Tolstoi of Science. He knows how to tell good stories, which any scientific writing should search, and which involves concepts and notions that evolve. There some impressing exposition on Wealth and Health, on Incone inequality within the USA, on income inequality in the world, as well as on some attempted remedies. Worth Reading for economists and non-economists

Has the human race made progress since the days when all our lives were nasty, brutish, and short? Some might think this question patently silly, since it would appear to answer itself. But Angus Deaton finds in it a point of entry into his inquiry on “health, wealth, and the origins of inequality,” the subtitle of his ambitious new book. He is in no doubt that humanity has progressed, not steadily but by fits and starts — and continues to do so to this day. “Today,” he writes, “children in sub-Saharan Africa are more likely to survive to age 5 than were English children born in 1918 . . . [and] India today has higher life expectancy than Scotland in 1945.”In The Great Escape, Deaton, a veteran professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton, explores inequality — between classes and between countries — with a detailed statistical analysis of trends in infant mortality, life expectancy, and income levels over the past 250 years. He concludes that the large-scale inequality that plagues policymakers and reformers alike in the present day is the result of the progress humanity has made since The Great Divergence (between “the West and the rest”) since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. “Economic growth,” Deaton asserts, “has been the engine of international income inequality.”No argument there: Deaton is far from alone in this belief. Other scholars have written extensively about this topic in recent years. A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World, by Gregory Clark, is just one example.Late in the 18th Century, the countries of Northern Europe and North America on the one hand and those of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America on the other hand were not that far apart as measured by the available indicators of health and income. Deaton cites “one careful study [that] estimates that the average income of all the inhabitants of the world increased between seven and eight times from 1820 to 1992.” However, that average obscures a harsh reality. The ever-quickening rate of change in “the West” since 1760 or so has widened the gap between (and within) countries to an extreme degree. Deaton terms the freedom from destitution and early death that so many of us now enjoy “The Great Escape,” taking his title from the 1963 film of that name about a massive escape of prisoners from a German P.O.W. camp in World War II.Only now is the gap closing between the rich nations and China and India (by far the world’s two biggest countries, with nearly 40 percent of the planet’s population and half the world’s poor). Deaton doesn’t consider a bright future for all a certainty, not by any means, in view of global climate change and the ever-present threat of killer pandemics. But, assuming the species continues to thrive, there is sufficient data available now to have some confidence that the gross inequality now existing among nations will not persist forever. After all, five sub-Saharan African countries are now growing their economies faster than China’s.However, that misleading factoid ignores the outsize role that China has played in “the Great Escape” globally. Deaton notes, as have other observers, that “the number [of] people in the world living on less than a (2005) dollar a day fell from about 1.5 billion in 1981 to 805 million in 2008 . . . [This] decline in numbers is driven almost entirely by the Chinese growth miracle; if China is excluded, 785 million people lived on less than a dollar a day in 1981 compared with 708 million in 2008.” (This reality is one of the principal reasons why Paul Polak and I insist in The Business Solution to Poverty that traditional methods to end poverty have largely failed. After all, China’s methods were hardly traditional!)In the course of exploring the historical record of growing inequality on the world stage, Deaton delves deeply into the role of foreign aid (officially, Overseas Development Assistance, or ODA) and finds it comes up short. ”You cannot develop other countries from the outside with a shopping list for Home Depot, no matter how much you spend,” he writes. With the exception of outside interventions in public health programs — including such breakthroughs as the eradication of smallpox and the near-success with polio — Deaton finds that foreign aid has done more harm than good. He argues that where the conditions for development are present, outside resources are unnecessary. Where they’re absent, ODA entrenches local elites, distorts the local economy, and discourages local initiative. The author insists that “the record of aid shows no evidence of any overall beneficial effect.”But that’s only part of the story. In 2012, ODA totaled about $136 billion. Throw in another $30 billion or so from NGOs, and total outside assistance comes to under $200 billion annually. However, net resource transfers from developing countries to rich countries are well in excess of $500 billion annually. (Transfers reached a peak of $881 billion in 2007, fell with the Great Recession, but are rising again.) Quite apart from the fact that an estimated 70 percent of “foreign aid” is actually spent on products and services from donor nations, ODA merely puts a dent in the huge disadvantage that poor countries suffer as a result of lopsided trade policies and prevailing political and commercial imbalances. In any case, just one factor in those resource flows — remittances from overseas residents of poor countries to their families back home — are twice as large as ODA.The Great Escape is a worthy effort from a senior scholar whose wide-ranging studies have led him to big-picture conclusions. Policymakers and practitioners should be listening carefully.

I learned a lot from this book. I wish the author had made it a little less graph heavy, but I liked that he thoroughly investigated all sides of his arguments. It's made me contemplate whether my service abroad was making a difference, or if I was part of the problem. I'm glad that this book was able to awaken me to that.

This book contains good tips for training and a very detailed history of the breed. There were a couple of points that made me a little hesitant to trust her advice though.First of all, she states over and over again that a Frenchie should not be left alone for more than a few hours a day because they are companion animals so someone with a full time job shouldn’t own a Frenchie (she explicitly says that if you work all day, your dog will be unhappy with the separation). This is just untrue. I’ve had two frenchies in the past 12 years, while of course, they would love for you to stay home all day to be available for play and to sleep on, but they adjust just fine to a consistent routine. I would even argue that they can thrive and be extremely happy while you are at work. I do have a camera so I can check in or talk to my dog and he is either sleeping or playing happily!Secondly, the raw food promotion as the best possible food for your dog was a little off putting. Raw food is at best controversial and at worst harmful to your puppy. It is sort of the dog equivalent of the Paleo diet without any research supporting its effectiveness. There are zero scientific studies that prove any kind of health benefit, only anecdotal evidence, and there are several studies that show evidence of harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella present in the food. It is also very easy to mess up the nutrients and cause health problems instead of preventing them. That is why I was disappointed with the hard sell on raw which is great in theory, but until there are actual scientific studies proving the benefits outweigh the risks, it would seem irresponsible to enthusiastically recommend the diet in your book. If you’re going raw, please do the research and consult your vet!As with most advice, I guess you just have to take what you need and leave the rest.

I am a first-time dog owner, let alone a first time Frenchie owner so I found this book beyond helpful and easy to understand. I just want to do right by my puppy and this book gives me all of the information that I need in order to be confident that I am raising a happy and healthy puppy.

Absolutely amazing book! Author gives you all the details & instruction you need in order to provide the best care for you new French Bulldog! Best choice I could have made by buying this book!

Looking for a new puppy and always love to read all I can before making a decision. Book was very informative and very honest in it's assessment.

Nice book to understand the frenchie as a dog and its history

The French Bulldog is a good book to read if you are thinking about getting this dog breed. I feel that Linda Whitwam covered very good points about this breed of dog.

Very comprehensive and easy to read. I knew nothing about this breed, but this book changed that!

It did have a lot of good history on the breed which is helpful in understanding there temperament and interesting in general. However, I think a lot of that info can be found on wikipedia or other free resources. The training info was very basic and not tailored to a frenchie specifically.
