A Practical Guide to Museum Ethics

Review

Is it ethical for museums to display classical sculpture without revealing conservation history? What steps, if any, should museum staff take if an autistic child behaves in a disruptive manner? Should museums retain or return Native American sacred objects? These and other types of challenging questions are posed by A Practical Guide to Museum Ethics, which considers all types of ethical dilemmas that arise in the museum field. Yerkovich poses various hypothetical situations involving ethics in daily museum work and provides possible solutions through the form of case studies. Topics include acquiring and managing collections, deaccessioning materials, controversy and censorship, conflicts of interest, and diversity and accessibility. The aim is to encourage museum professionals to think proactively rather than reactively when museum controversies become newspaper headlines and to engage people in regular conversation on ethical issues in museums. The work draws heavily on the American Alliance of Museums' Code of Ethics for Museums along with other governing documents on ethics in the museum field included as appendixes. This practical guide is a required resource for museum professionals and students in museum studies programs. The book's accessible language and thought-provoking case studies make it appropriate for all readership levels.Summing Up: Highly recommended. Undergraduates through professionals/practitioners. (CHOICE)This volume, divided into 10 chapters, explores a wide range of areas in the museum world, from acquisition of collections and deaccessioning items to fundraising, external pressures on museums, collection conservation, and diversity and access. Issues of cultural heritage, censorship, and management responsibility are also addressed. Also included are four codes of ethics developed by various American museum organizations. The book employs ‘hypothetical and real-life cases’ to wrestle with all of these issues. It also provides a multistep framework for analyzing and resolving potential ethical issues in the museum setting. Although focused on museums, this volume could also interest others studying ethics, as the topics examined here are not ones generally discussed in broader analyses of ethics. Their real-life setting should expand the reader’s reflection. Academic and some public libraries should consider this reasonably priced work. (American Reference Books Annual)This is a book that the museum field has been waiting for since the American Alliance (then Association) of Museums undertook revision of the Code of Ethics for Museums in 1991.... This book can go a long way towards generating productive dialogues about ethical practice. It should be required reading for anyone who teaches museum studies, works with boards of directors, or is responsible for writing a museum's code of ethics. (New England Museum Association)“Wide-ranging, bursting with case studies, this guide to museum ethics is written by an expert in museum practice who has been there, done that. Not full of theoretical hand-wringing, or of gargantuan length, this book will be of real use to museum people all over the world, including governing bodies, which carry responsibility but which often fail to grasp the niceties of what is and what isn’t ethical. My only complaint is that I wish this book had been written sooner.” (David Fleming, Ph.D., Professor of Public History at Hope University in Liverpool, England, and former Director of the National Museums Liverpool)

You don't have to be a museum professional to enter into the complex world of ethical decision making described in this book. The stories in each chapter read like a great detective story. Will they? Won't they? Should they? Shouldn't they? What are the "right" answers? Well written, gripping, a great read!

The Great White Shark Scientist (Scientists in the Field Series), by Sy Montgomery

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Prepare to be enveloped in saltwater air and dizzying blue water in this latest entry from veteran author Montgomery. A tense opening line delivered by 52-year-old great white shark biologist Greg Skomal is sure to hook readers: "It's pretty treacherous right here." But as they will soon discover, for Skomal and team, the even greater danger is not seeing a great white at all. Montgomery deftly balances information and intrigue without delving into the sensational; the emphasis is always on providing unique insight into the fieldwork of scientists and the absolute patience and perseverance it takes to locate, identify, gather, and analyze scientific data under challenging circumstances. Her travels with Skomal and her journey into a shark cage with biologist Erick Higuera are evidence of a genuine interest in understanding great whites and reversing negative attitudes about them. Readers will come to learn that the perceived danger surrounding sharks does not always match reality (the prime example offered being the astounding number of Americans injured by toilets in comparison to shark-related deaths in a year) and that these creatures are in desperate need of quality protection and conservation efforts. Ellenbogen's crystal clear photographs range from intimate shots of crew members and aquatic life to large aerial overviews of the inlets and waters they are sailing on—students will be sure to stop and linger over these gorgeous images. VERDICT Exceptionally written and highly recommended for those looking to give a timely summer boost to STEM collections.—Della Farrell, School Library Journal

Kirkus Best of 2016 Nonfiction Detectives: Best of 2016 * "Exceptionally written and highly recommended for those looking to give a timely summer boost to STEM collections."—School Library Journal, STARRED review * "Readers interested in marine biology in general or great white sharks in particular will find the text informative and the you-are-there immediacy of the writing exciting."—Booklist, STARRED review * "This appreciative introduction to a much-maligned species will thrill readers while it encourages them to see great white sharks in a new way."—Kirkus, STARRED review "One minute Montgomery recounts the technical details of shark tracking, the next minute relays the steps she needs to take to be safe on the ocean, and the next narrates an all-out shark chase, as researchers on a boat and in a plane work together in a successful shark identification bonanza. This approach fully immerses readers in the field research experience, as do the excellent photographs of people, sharks, and the environment. In, on, and especially above the ocean, Ellenbogen captures the majesty of the great whites as well as the beauty and impermanence of the Atlantic barrier islands, dunes, and shoreline."—Horn Book "Montgomery’s play-by-play narration and Ellenbogen’s dramatic photos give the scientific excursion a thrilling sense of immediacy that should leave readers feeling like they’re along for the voyage."—Publishers Weekly "Montgomery goes to great, and often humorous, lengths to put the actual danger of shark-on-human attack into perspective (annual average number of people killed by sharks—11; of sharks killed by people—100,000,000), but when dealing with fish prone to devour their unborn siblings, there’s still ample delight for thrill seekers."—Bulletin

Great book for 11 year old granddaughter who is fearful about sharks. Terrific information, fun but factual data, nicely told story. Highly credible female scientist. Superior quality.

I bought one for myself...and got another who is a big fan of Greg Skomal

SY Montgomery's books are all gems!

Bought for our ten year old grandson and he loves the book so started reading it immediately.

Follow a marine biologist studying the great white sharks that live off the coast of Cape Cod during the summers and some of his associates who are working to fight the bad rap sharks have, and then go down in a cage to experience great whites up close in Guadalupe.Kids love sharks, so I have no doubt this book will find its way into several reading hands. Personally, I didn't find this to be Montgomery's most riveting writing and they spend a lot of time in a boat trying to find sharks to get photos and video of for identification purposes. It gives a fantastic picture of how long and hard field research can be, which is important for kids who really are interested in the field. However, it doesn't make edge-of-your-seat reading. Still good, but not the best Scientist in the Field book. Also a great book to read about dispelling common shark myths. The one page of stats of what is more likely to kill you is quite eye-opening (beware your toaster and toilet).

This book is adorable and a great easy read for children to understand. The illustrations are adorable and done very well! I love that this not only makes a great gift for a child or friend... but it also supports a sanctuary - so you’ll be helping out future kitties that need help :] Get it as a gift for the upcoming holidays! xoxo

This is a fantastic book for families to read to young children grades K-2, about personal and cats differing abilities. How all should be included in everyday life with consideration, kindness, respect, appreciation, and love. I have purchased a copy for myself, and had the library where I am working, to also buy a copy for the Children's collection. A fantastic little read that brings light the true value of treating others equally and with reverence. Kudos to the author!

ADORABLE CHILDREN’S BOOK! I adore this book! I got it because of how much I love Maya from the odd cat sanctuary in MA, but my students loved all the silly drawings and it was a great way to talk about acceptance and people being different! It was great for me to be able to explain to my kids people look differently and are born differently with such a cute recognizable face for them! I love this book and Maya! Thank you!

This was a gem of a book! The illustrations are great and the story is simple and easy for the kids to follow. The story is also really sweet! It's just purrfect ;) It's a great way to share the message of acceptance to kids through a lovable cat named Maya. She has her own Instagram account at @meetmayacat that is really fun for you and the kiddos to follow along with -- it shows her everyday life and adventures! This was such a great purchase and I think it's a must for every child's library. This books also comes with an amazing bonus -- the proceeds go to The Odd Cat Sanctuary as well as the Special Olympics! So, not only do you get this great book to spread the wonderful message of acceptance to your children, you are also contributing to some really great charities!

This is the best book for children. Every child should learn about special needs children. I have a daughter with special needs, and when I see a child staring at my daughter I wish I could explain that my daughter is a little different because she is in a wheelchair, but she has just the same feelings as anyone else.

I purchased this book for my toddler-aged daughter. She’s still at the age where she may or may not sit through the time it takes me to read it, but I have to say that I enjoy the story. It’s simple enough for a young child, and I really enjoy the overall message. My daughter has a developmental disability, so I try to purchase books that promote diversity and inclusivity - in this case, even for cats! In our community, we have a saying that states that or children are “more alike than different” - I would say this book also portrays that message. Not to mention, I also appreciate that part of the proceeds are donated to a charity.

This was a well drawn, well written book so people understand there are differences in people and especially a well loved "different" cat. She has her differences but she can do stuff cats can do. please read and get, all proceeds go to helping Odd Cat Sanctuary where Maya was adopted and Special Olympics to help great kids.

This book is amazing! It’s a simple story and the pictures are fantastic! I would highly recommend this book for elementary schools for kids that may feel they are different and I would recommend possibly animal shelters buy it or get people to donate and give to kids that adopt imperfect pets!!

Having read "The River of Doubt" by Ms. Millard, I was a bit wary of this work; the earlier book, about Theodore Roosevelt's perilous trip to the Amazon, was good, but I found it a bit tedious. Well, regardless of whether I was right or wrong about her earlier work, Ms. Millard's account of the all too short presidency and assassination of James Garfield is a wonderful, gripping book. She brings President Garfield to passionate and fascinating life and demonstrates that his death deprived us of a great leader. She also describes his (mis)treatment at the hands of an arrogant and incompetent physician in sometimes gruesome but always fascinating detail. Every member of the large cast of characters, from politicians to family members, is brought to vivid and individual life. This is a book that gives history a good name and proves once again that truth can be not only stranger than fiction, but more fun to read. A great achievement!

My wife and I both wanted to read this excellent history for a book club we belong to, so we obtained a copy on CD and listened to it on our recent 2,100 mile vacation to NC and VA. It is a must for American history buffs. Though I'm a recovering politician with a masters in history, I knew little about Garfield beyond the facts that he was a Union Civil War General, had been elected president as a Republican and was assassinated shortly after taking office. I came to respect and like the man through Millard's treatment. I was surprised to find that he had not sought the nomination, had been for Sen. John Sherman, and was nominated against his wishes when the GOP convention bolted to him on the 36th ballot. I was also impressed with the kind of man he was. And dismayed to discover that his wound should not have been fatal, that what killed him was the introduction of infection by his doctors, especially the chief I'm-in-charge-here Dr. Bliss, as they did not believe in Lister's germ theory. An interesting subtheme was the efforts of Alexander Graham Bell to invent a machine that would locate the bullet in Garfield's body. It worked, except that Dr. Bliss would only let Bell try the machine on Garfield's right side where he wrongly but strongly believed the bullet was lodged. Bell's machine went on to save many lives before x-Rays were developed. I previously enjoyed Millard's book "River of Doubt" and am looking forward to reading her "Hero of the Empire." She is a treasure for those of us who still care about history.Robert A. HallAuthor: The Coming Collapse of the American Republic

I first heard about this book on a PBS radio interview with the author. Candice Millard was a very interesting guest and her synopsis of her book about President Garfield was spell bounding. When I had the chance, I ordered the book from Amazon, but, didn't read it until a year later. I thought possibly that it was a "dark" depressing story about how President Garfield suffered after the assassination attempt and it would be kind of grueling to get through. 2014 wasn't a very good year for me and I wanted to read lighthearted stories with happy endings. Here it is September 2015 and the world for me is a bit brighter, so, I gave the book a try. How surprised I was to find that this story is compelling, full of actual facts, and very much like 3 biographies in one! If you are a fan of biographical history books, you will really enjoy this one. Candice Millard is a very fine author and describes in detail the story of how Garfield became president, how Alexander Graham Bell tried to help the President recover from his wounds with another of his inventions, and how the crazed lunatic assassin plotted to shoot the President. I didn't learn any of this in history class! The story certainly doesn't have a happy ending, but, it really made me think of the strides and progress in modern medicine that we take for granted today. If only Garfield were wounded today, he would not have succumbed to his injuries. I look forward to reading future writings by this author.

Be honest now. How much did you learn in school about the assassination of President James A. Garfield? I can recall little more than that he was killed by a disappointed office seeker named Charles Guiteau. But who were these men? Was Guiteau simply frustrated by not being handed a juicy sinecure under the spoils system or had he displayed a long history of mental aberration? At his trial, Guiteau claimed that the ineptness of the president's doctors, not his bullet, was the real cause of Garfield's death—and there is much to indicate that his statement was factually correct! Did you know that as recently as the 1880s, barely over a single century ago and well after the American Civil War, many American doctors rejected a “belief” in germs and a “belief” in the efficacy of sterilization even though Lister had already proven these “ideas” to the satisfaction of European doctors?Other historians have published excellent overall histories, Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States being among the very best as far as the U.S. is concerned. Candice Millard, however, has chosen to select specific events from history and to seek out the details that explicate them. She then relates those details to us in a fascinatingly readable style. No fiction writer can create interest in a story any better than Millard does with actual history. I suggest that, if you care little (or nothing) about James A. Garfield or Charles Guiteau, it is only because you know more or less nothing about them, and I do believe that Millard's Destiny of the Republic will go far in introducing you to two persons (and more) who played a part in forming the American experience.
