Although this book was an interesting read, I doubt that I will ever reread it. I had a problem with Adalia almost from the beginning. If my brother was missing and someone approached me claiming to be a friend and offering to help, I cannot imagine being rude and obnoxious to him. I would, at the very least, want to hear what he had to say. I liked Toren and he became more self-aware as the story progressed. Adalia, on the other hand, made some stupid decisions and engaged in some pretty obnoxious dialogue. Supposedly concerned for her nieces' safety, she leaves them with the hero to run off to live somewhere else because she can't get him to say "I love you"? Hmmm...doesn't seem all that committed to the nieces or the hero. There were too many inconsistencies for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed Of Valor & Vice. Toren and Adalia made interesting and believable characters who were thoroughly likable, changing gradually as the story progressed.I give it 4.5 stars, knocking off a half star solely for using the all-too-common romance novel ploy of having the heroine stupidly leave because her gent can't or won't say the magic words "I love you."Writing mechanics are good and shouldn't put off "grammar tyrants" like myself who are offended/annoyed at unprofessional writing. K.J. Jackson has clearly mastered the tools of her trade.
Ms. Jackson has produced a very satisfying story that kept me engaged to the very end. Her characters were well-developed, the plot a simple one, and the dialogue authentic. The setting was full of descriptions that didn't overwhelm this reader yet set the tone for time and space.Toren was an intriguingly constructed character, full of traits one would expect not to read about in a regency (sp?) novel, yet done very well. I particularly liked that he remained true to his form even at the end.Adalia was not a surprise since she had to be as she was in order for the relationship between she and Toren to work. I loved her fierce loyalty to the twins, and her desire for them to be safe. The only time I felt bothered was during the first time Adalia discovered Toren was teaching them to ride ponies. I felt Adalia's reaction was over-the-top. I had not sensed any of that sort of strict protectiveness from her prior to that point, so it's coming out as it did was jarring.Otherwise, it was a well-written story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I plan on getting more work by this talented author.
Most folks who've studied literature and drama know the phrase, "suspension of disbelief." Suspending our rational disbelief is how we're able to enjoy movies like Star Wars and Harry Potter. It's only possible when the story is real and compelling, and "Of Vice and Valor" falls quite short. The personalities were farfetched and unrelatable. It really struck me as the afternoon-soap-opera version of Regency romance. Having marital communication problems? Sex will fix it. Upset about the children? Let's have sex. Haven't seen each other for three weeks? Let's have sex. The characters and the physical surroundings all seemed fake and insubstantial to me. No more KJ Jackson.
I own every single one of K.J. Jackson's historical romances and am unable to choose one as a favorite. They're ALL my favorite! Indeed, OF VALOR & VICE is simply the most recent.Toren (love the name!) and Ada are an unusual couple, each with their own hidden depths of sorrow and strength. The gradual revelations of these depths come at a satisfying pace throughout the novel, but still there are surprises, often when least expected. That's what makes them surprises, of course!There is so much to enjoy in the book-- excellent dialogue, descriptions, and character development are all there. I've come to expect no less from this author.

Each page of this novel sucked me into story, and each character came alive on its pages. I loved Adalia, and my heart ached for the boyhood that had shaped Toren. The plot had every facet that puts a book into the five star category; danger, suspense, laughter, sweetness, tender sensuous passion and slow growing personal awareness. This is one of those few novels that I will remember and read again.FYI: This is a stand alone novel with adult sexual content.
A beautiful, beautiful love story! It brought joy to my heart. The wedding night was well written. In the end, love did conquer all although I was worried a few times. Anyone who gives this book less than 4 stars should not be reading this genre. There was sex but it was appropriate for the story line and not too descriptive.
K.J. Jackson always turns out well-written books and this is no exception to that rule. Her characters are well-rounded. It took me a few chapters to connect with the main characters in this one but once I got to know them, I felt invested in their story. There was a part of the suspense I didn't figure out in advance, which is always fun. I look forward to the rest of this series.
