When I started researching my genealogy a couple of years ago - I realized I only knew the basics of what happened during slavery -- and it was through a white lens. Plus, what I knew didn't even scratch the surface.I do remember that White women were always presented as helpful to the enslaved --- and anti-slavery. As if, they really didn't want to see anyone enslaved -- nor did they partake in enslaving and violence against the enslaved. They were presented and spoken about as "Southern Belles." Pleasant, delicate, progressive -- and most of all -- a victim -- just like the enslaved. With that realization and embedded memory, I decided to start researching and dedicating time to learning about what our ancestors went through during slavery in the Colonial Era and the Antebellum South.I soon found out -- everything I knew and learned -- was either minimized or a flat out lie."They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South" -- finally shines a light on all the lies that we were led to believe about White women and their role in slavery in America. Learning about the extreme violence, jealously and hatefulness they practiced is enough to make you want to put the book down. But the stories of the enslaved children, women and men who were their victims deserve to be heard.Congrats and THANK YOU to Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers for such a ground-breaking book. I pray you lend your voice and scholarship to the #ADOS movement in the future.
This is a book that upends what one might have assumed about "genteel" antebellum women who had slaves in their households and properties to labor. Many of these women were not the fluttery, vapid social butterflies who were minimally impacted by slavery; on the contrary, they were often VERY involved owners who bought, sold, traded, and punished the slaves that they often owned in their own right, not a husband's or father's, and like any other property, they were capitalized to extract the most value, even if that meant separating families. These women were not the gentler sex in this regard, as often they were the equal of white men in brutalizing their slaves' bodies and minds. Women, in those days, were perceived as maternal creatures who took care of their slaves as they would children, which was hardly ever the case. This was disturbing reading for me, and ripped away the illusion that women could be trusted to behave better due to their maternal instincts. That, and the fact that these people considered themselves God-fearing Christians, which portrays this type of Christianity in a terrible light.
I can't find the words to put together a proper review for this book. Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers absolutely blew my mind with her research. The testimony of formerly enslaved people, just wow! I am speechless. The information provided is not an easy one to digest, but I could not put this book down. This is a must read, no this needs to be a required read. Thank you NetGalley & Yale University Press for the eARC.
The complex reality of history is more important to grasp than sanitized myth. Thank you for this book.
