Great information , so if you are considering buying a car you should read this book.
The book has a fair amount of redundancy - which is particularly noticeable in a short book. The editing was just average. There are also some items of fact that seem questionable, and there are so many it pretty well overshadows the limited useful information in the book.1. Adds for things like $199/month are almost always for leases these days, not for financing. Has been that way for a long long time.2. I have not yet ever run into a *dealer* backed warranty. That would be crazy - what if the dealership disappeared? All of the ones I have ever seen were either manufacturer based or a 3rd party company. Yes, the dealer makes money on the transaction - but generally they are not the company behind the warranty. (See Chapter 7)3. These days invoice pricing is quite easy to find (KBB.com, for example). (Chapter 5)4. The math in the financing chapter (Chapter 7) has at least one error. $15,000 @ 1.9% would be < $300/year, so much less than $2000 for 3-5 years. $13,000 @ 1.9% would be closer to $250/year, again much less than $2000 for 3-5 years.5. The information on liability and leasing in Chapter 10 is really bad. If a driver gets into an accident, the *driver* gets sued (of course, the owner may also get sued, but can usually avoid a judgement). Also, in a leasing arrangement, unless the mfg is the leasing company, it does not own the car. The leasing company does. Finally, the lessee IS the one who DRIVES the car. Who they cannot go after is the owner - the LESSOR. This was so messed up it calls the entire chapter into question.6. The Money Factor calculation is wrong. To get the percentage, multiply the money factor by 2400. So, a MF of .0025 is 6%. A MF of .00034 would only be .816%.7. Money down on a lease reduces the amount financed - so it gets you to a larger capitalized cost for a given payment. YOU PAY IT ANYWAY EVENTUALLY. The real effect is to reduce the total finance charges.8. Splitting the difference (Chapter 11) should result in an offer of $13,250, not $12,250.9. It was disappointing that time was not spent on the process and ins and outs of getting quotes via the Internet.10. Regarding Hybrids: it depends on the town. College towns seem to have a lot of them.
I have read many books like this one; including this one from a friend who forwarded to me.Nothing new here that common sense would dictate.I've sold cars in the industry for 20 years; most of these books including this one come off as a disgruntled former sales person.I've had authors contact me wanting the "inside scoop" on car sales.I generally give them the same advice; "If you want to know how the process of buying a vehicle works from a dealership perspective, you need to work at a dealership for at least 2 years"
