Good book but has shortfalls. For the Kindle version reading, the dimensions are almost impossible. Especially the fractions. The illustrations do not scale at all. So increasing the font size does not help.I've completed three of the double-screened inner covers.Now that I'm finished I don't think they will work unless I add a modification to the Outer Hive Cover. As described in the drawings the double screened cover will rest flush under the Outer Hive Cover. If so, then this negates the use of the screen 100%.Also, the design calls for a 1/8" x 1" rabbit along the entire inner surface to allow the #8 cloth to rest flush with the surface. It then describes cutting a 3/8" opening on one side for an upper bee entrance. This doesn't work because it will have the cloth covering the entrance. To make this work the rabbit on one side needs to be 1/2" to allow for the 3/8" opening. I did not catch this until I had cut wood for three inner covers.Finally, he describes almost all of these projects as very simple to build. He is correct if you have a very good woodworking background and a workshop full of tools. For instance, for the inner cover, I used a table saw, drill press, bandsaw, a square clamp, router table, and two 3 foot clamps to ensure all legs were square and aligned.

I expected better from Blackiston. The other book he authored, "Beekeeping for Dummies", was much more informational, and more accurate. In this volume the illustrations don't always follow the text, and in some cases a drawing conflicts with one on the same page. In Chapter 16, for instance, The Solar Wax Melter, page 210 is confusing. At the top of the page it shows the Upper Floor to be screwed to the top edge of the Riser, while just below it shows the Riser to protrude ABOVE the Upper Floor. You can't have it both ways! A better design provides at least an inch of the Upper Floor extending over the Riser so the viscous molten wax will pour into the pan below, and not be allowed to drip down the front of the Riser and miss the collection pan. For that matter, the Lower Floor should sit level, not inclined. That way the pan will fill up level and not have a 15 degree slope when the wax solidifies.On page 214 the painting instructions (6.) are reversed with assembly of the glazed top (5.) Why would you want to paint all wooden surfaces AFTER installing the glass? Anyone with carpentry skills would paint the prescribed 2 or 3 coats and THEN install the glass instead of having to clean paint off the greenhouse panel.

The book does have some good diagrams, but it spends too much time talking about beekeeping rather than components of the hive. Obviously written for the British and European market (mentioned crown boards rather than inner cover), and missed quite a few components that I was hoping it would cover... nothing about slatted racks for one, and tried to cover all forms of bee hives, Warre, TBH, British National, and several others. By trying to cover EVERYTHING for EVERYONE, it falls short of doing much of ANYTHING for ANYONE. Talks about making frames, which is a labor and jig intensive procedure, not the realm of hobbyist making their own gear. Author was described as a 30+ year beekeeper, but this book must have been ghost written. I am also a 30+ year beekeeper and expected a more focused guide as represented by the title. Not a lot of "practical" information for building components, and way too much time and print spent on other aspects of beekeeping. Even with a rather cursory exam I noticed some items were mislabeled identifications of components. Not what I needed. Disappointment for the "Dummies" series. I will be more careful in selecting any of the other "Dummies" series, especially those concerning beekeeping. If you are looking for information on how to build hive components I would bypass this edition unless you just need to fill the slot in your "Dummies" series.

First "Dummies book" I have ever been disappointed in. This book would not have any need for printing if they had added 10 pages to Beekeeping for dummies. The author pulled enough material from Beekeeping to make this book look like something worth having. Poor purchase on my part, one time I regret not going to a brick and mortar store. Shame on Howland Blackston.

Looked online for instructions on building hives and it seemed every site had a different method of construction although all ended up with the same basic dimensions which are necessary if you are purchasing frames or other pieces of a hive. Since my woodworking shop is fairly well equipped, I wanted to use box joint construction which is one of the strongest possible joints and therefore the hive should last and take some abuse. Building Beehives for Dummies was one of the few books or instruction sets that I found that used the box joint construction method. Also, method shown for building frames was straight forward and again was within my abilities. This book was purchased as an ebook which made reading some of the diagrams difficult and skipping between pages was tough. Would probably purchase the printed edition if I were to buy this book again.

Looks like a comprehensive book about building your own hives. This is a good fall and winter project, gotta have those hives ready for your bee colonies when they arrive in April. 2019 will be my first year with bees, I need to see more bees in my garden!

There are several styles of hives to build. The plans, materials lists and cutting lists are straight forward. The accessories section is a definite plus. I am particularly interested in the Langstroth hive and the accessories. Since my area has plenty of winter and spring rain an angled entrance would help keep moisture out of the hive. Maybe the author can add that to the accessories section as a screened bottom board with an angled entrance.

I like his writing style so much that i bought the Regular Expressions book too. Get this book if you are a PeopleSoft user who is new to PL/SQL reporting. The Common Place of Law, by Ewick and Silbey, asserts that law exists autonomous from while being constitutive of daily life, with legality defined at one point as a social structure actively and constantly produced in what people say and do (however it must be noted that the others give other definitions of legality later in the book). Based on this conception, the authors interviewed a random sample of 430 adults in New Jersey to gain insights into their interactions, finding that people act before, with, or against the law. While this analysis brings forward interesting issues, it left many questions.First, there are basic questions regarding methodology. A random sample that only takes into account adults in New Jersey may not get a wide range of people's experiences with the law given that New Jersey has different laws, methods of judicial administration, and enforcement policies than other states. A further methodological issue concerns the fact that the interviews took 2-3 hours, eliminating those who do not have that much free time.Second, the authors left the reification issue partially unexplained. They assert that individuals construct meanings that, once institutionalized, become part of the systems that constrain future meaning making; when these ideas are constructed, how long do they take to reify, and how do they change after reification? Further, because Ewick and Silbey's theory allows for schemas to change with the introduction of new information, can reification, which by definition concerns treating something as a concrete entity, ever really occur? Using the authors' example of witchcraft, why is it that Americans by and large no longer subscribe to paganism, while in some areas it is still practiced? Some schemas must be more rigid than others, but why is this especially given the fact that the same information is available to most everyone?In summary, the authors brought forward some interesting points, but further explanation would be enlightening.

The richness of this book comes from four hundred thirty interviews that support the text. The gist of the book is that people have three takes on the law: before the law, against the law, and with the law."Before the law" is an attitude of awe and respect for the institution. Faith in that day in court, that statue of blind justice and the policeman is my friend. "Against the law" is an attitude of resistance to the institution. Law as a caprice of the powerful, and resistance the right way to deal with it. "With the law" is an attitude of game playing with the institution. I didn't make the rules, but me and my lawyer, we sure as hell will play the game. People shift and change among these modes depending on where they are in life, the particulars of the situation, and growing experience with the law.The biggest contribution of this book is in highlighting the game playing aspect of dealing with law. I think game-playing gets short shrift from other law authors who may be stuck inside their very serious institution. Most other books reduce game-playing to simple economic theory and don't pay enough attention to the human side of gaming with the law. I mean, really. Just look at how big the sports section of the Sunday paper is versus the economic analysis section! Games are a big part of everyday life. Ewick & Silbey give game-playing the appropriate type of attention. Big bravo.My only criticism is that the language of this book is mainly for an academic audience, and thus I give it only four stars-sorry. The writing could be de-academicized and made more powerful and popular. Overall it is an excellent, meticulously researched bookI got the book for its cover-the picture of chairs in newly shoveled parking space. Now that's a real hotbed of attitude in the informal/formal law divide. Thanks to the authors and worker-bees for all their work.

This is an excellent book that every preacher or aspiring preacher should read. Gordon's criticism of modern-day preaching is a necessary one since many have given up trying to improve upon their preaching. He laments that many congregations have excused their pastor's weakness in preaching by emphasizing their other areas of strength such as counseling or administrative skills. Gordon's conclusion for anemic preaching is that the media has affected and infected the preacher's thinking, writing, and preaching. Preachers aren't able to concentrate for long periods of time as they are constantly distracted by the media.Gordon's solutions are not popular. He suggests that to be a good preacher one must be a good reader of ancient texts and master the ability to communicate that text in written form. He suggests writing letters by hand instead of email. His most controversial solution is that every preacher should receive an annual review of their preaching.Gordon writes as a dying man to dying men. Gordon's cancer allowed him to confront his fellow preachers with a focused urgency in the weighty task of preaching God's Word.

Written for the man in the pews. Brother Gordon illuminates the techno-cultural reasons that the average seminary graduate is not ready for the pulpit. In this day and age, we have shunted away from reading. All the average college student has grown up with are sound bites. Perhaps less than one percent have ever read one of the Great Books of the Western World, let alone any great work by so many of the wonderful authors of 18th, 19th and early 20th century novels. Gordons point is well taken. When you can't read well and can't write well, you will never be able to preach well

The title is severe enough as to make no apologies for the content, so the only critique left for the potential reader is to determine whether or not the author convincingly defended his thesis. I believe he did. Like Gordon and his wife, I have suffered under years of poor preaching in my local church.What are the reasons? Gordon makes a case that the gospel is being smothered by poor exposition of God's word. He goes on to suggest a number of ways preachers can get it right. They all will require both the preacher and the saints to do things differently. If you are attracted by the title of this book, you will not be disappointed by the contents. If you are an elder in your church and struggle with preaching, know then that these admonitions and advice also pertain to you and will require you to do some things differently.I did not give this book five stars because I believe that Gordon might have been a bit more exhaustive with recommendations on how to preach, even if that was not what the book submitted as its thtesis. One suggestion that I have found helpful has been the memorization of Scripture because memorization obliges deep investigation and deep investigation leads to deep understanding and deep understanding leads to deep exposition which when preached, leads to transformed bodies in Christ.

Gordon contends that Johnny can’t preach because Johnny can’t read or write due to the negative influences technological advances have had on the upcoming generations. Gordon claims that the fast pace of electronic media has given people an inability to pay attention and take time to read things carefullly. This inability to read texts carefully results with people not reading their Bibles closing, especially preachers who cannot distinguish the nuanced differences of similar texts. Furthermore, because preachers can’t distinguish the nuanced differences, they preach in generalities and apply their sermons in generalities.Not only can Johnny not read, but Johnny can’t write. Gordon insists that inventions such as the telephone are directly responsible for people’s inability to write oranganized compositions. Since preachers are so used to having disorganized telephone conversations and no longer write hand-written letters, their sermons lack unity. They preach disorganized messages with no central theme or point, leaving the hearers lost and confused.After diagnosing this problems, Gordon offers both warnings related to preaching fallacies and advice about how to improve as a preacher, including reading frequently, writing often, and focusing on preaching Christ-centered, redemptive sermons.This book is a valuable tool for preachers who wish to understand the adverse effects of technological advances on the culture as well as how to become better preachers.

Gordon takes a hard-line stance on a problem that is even more prevalent today than he could have imagined when first penning this book in 2004. The basic premise is that our social world and its media make the preacher (and everyone, for that matter) improperly equipped to effectively read and understand the Word and then re-articulate it to his (captive) listeners. It’s hard to disagree with that!Gordon probably alienates the people he desires to win over because of his tone, which borders on shrill at his most passionate moments. However, his point is valid, and those who disagree need to be able to articulate what it is they disagree with.As an aside, I personally disagree with his conclusion that a Christi-centric preaching model will “fix” this problem. I would hope that sounds hermeneutics can be applied and excellent preaching still be practiced.

It isn't exactly a how-to manual, more an overview of how the whole process works. Thus, it is useful not only to someone who wants to learn how to do this, but also to those who might be interested in deciding if this technique would be useful to them. And actually, the whole topic is sufficiently cool that I would recommend the book even to people who know they will never use this technique, just because its fun to read about it. The book is clearly written and doesn't assume alot of prior knowledge. A basic undergrad education in math would be enough to handle the equations.

The author is one of the inventors of this technique. And he also won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 2017 because of his contribution in Cryo-EM. So it absolutely worth to read it.

The setting is Sri Lanka, 1980, and it is the season of monsoons. Fourteen-year-old Amrith is caught up in the life of the cheerful, well-to-do household in which he is being raised by his vibrant Auntie Bundle and kindly Uncle Lucky. He tries not to think of his life "before," when his doting mother was still alive. Amrith's holiday plans seem unpromising: he wants to appear in his school's production of "Othello and he is learning to type at Uncle Lucky's tropical fish business. Then, like an unexpected monsoon, his cousin arrives from Canada and Amrith's ordered life is storm-tossed. He finds himself falling in love with the Canadian boy. Absolutely wonderful writing--decriptions that are so vivid that you can taste the foods and smell the spices of the tropics. Set in Sri Lanka in 1980, it is the story of 14 year old Amrith, an orphan being raised by his Aunt Bundle and Uncle Lucky. (Yep, those are really their names) His life is forever changed when his cousin, Niresh, arrives from Canada. The story in intertwined with Shakespeare's play Othello, as Amrith copes with his jealousy as he falls in love with his cousin.Although Amrith's sexuality is part of the story, there is nothing inappropriate as a Young Adult novel.Highly recommended

I'll admit, I found the first 90 or so pages slightly slow, but once Niresh shows up things got a lot more interesting. I loved Amrith's affection and feeling of possessiveness toward his cousin, emotions Amrith justifies with the fact that his parents were taken from him when he was young and his extended family turned their backs on him because of scandal surrounding his parents' marriage. Niresh's fierce, bold, wild-child attitude is the perfect contrast to Amrith's quiet, reserved one. All characters are likable and three-dimensional, but Amrith was especially empathetic. When he began to feel as though he were losing his cousin to the attention of his sisters, I felt his pain. When he was struggling to balance his increasing inner turmoil (regarding his feelings for Niresh and discovering his sexuality) with competing for an important part in the school play, I felt his anguish. His is a character easy to root for. I enjoyed learning about Sri Lankan culture, the ways its traditional roots compared and contrasted with its westernization. The author's voice was just mesmerizing, putting me into an almost sedative state as I read this charming novel.

This is one of the easiest books I have read in a really long time. I literally breezed through it, and found it charming. But what is truly surprising is not that the book is so easy, but the fact that it manages to be so even while painting pictures of lands which draw you into them, while detailing characters to an extent that you can really empathize with them, and while conveying a variety and depth of emotions that is highly commendable. That's a formidable task for any writer, but Shyam Selvadurai continues to impress with his literary capabilities even today just the way he had done with his excellent first novel "Funny Boy".The book is set in Colombo, during a hot and humid lazy summer vacation in the life of 14-year old Amrith. The vacation begins uneventfully and promises to have no bigger highlight than practicing for a school drama till Amrith is suddenly confronted by his past, and much to his complete surprise, is very soon overjoyed and completed absorbed by it. As the days go by, however, Amrith's emotions go through a roller-coaster ride as he learns more about his family and friends, but above all, about himself. The vacation period turns out to the coming-of-age one for Amrith, and he finally comes to terms with his new discoveries and learning.There is no dearth of coming-of-age books, and many might be better, or at the very least, more poignant, but that should any deter you from reading another book on this widely dealt with subject, for the combination of the locale, the protagonist's situation, and Mr. Selvadurai's writing make this a book worthy of it's own place on the bookshelves of bibliophiles.Finally, I'd like to make particular point about this book: I really don't think of it as a "young adults" book at all - it is a book for everybody. It is a lovely piece of writing, and will surely leave a positive mark on your literary journey, irrespective of who you are.

The dust jacket makes it seem like this novel is just about a boy falling in love with another boy, but really, Amrith's love for Niresh is only peripheral to the plot. More important is Amrith's reconciling his feelings about his dead parents and the trouble in their families, and his adoptive parents and sisters, whom he both loves and hates. All the main characters in the story are fully real, and Amrith's growing maturity is well portrayed.However, this book did have some flaws. It was overly didactic -- obviously written for a Western audience that had no notion of Sri Lankan life, there was a little too much explaining about customs and architecture and the weather. The other, bigger problem (in my mind) is that way too much was told rather than shown, particularly about Amrith's feelings. It was as if the author didn't trust the reader to draw the correct conclusions and had to spoon-feed them everything.I would give this book a B, and might be tempted to pick up more of this author's work in the future. I hope he works out his showing-telling problem.

He explores these feelings against a rising darkness within him and memories of his mother and his past. He attempts to forget and focus on his acting skills at drama society in school, and typing at his adopted father, Uncle Lucky's office, but as fate would have it, his past lands on his doorstep in the guise of a cousin from Canada.Amrith finds a new found happiness in Niresh, his maternal cousin, and intrigue in a life so different from his. Somehow along the way, his relationship with Niresh is threatened, and Amrith begins to blame his adopted family. In the midst of the rising past, he deals with his own turmoils of sexual awakening and identity.The story is intended for young adults, but like Harry Potter, even adults will find pleasure reading it.
