Having recently been diagnosed with sensitivities to dairy, wheat, eggs, and several types of nuts, I wanted to find a cookbook where I wouldn't have to modify all of the recipes to meet my needs. I also try to eat a very clean diet, so I don't want to use a bunch of processed ingredients to recreate the foods I am omitting. Autoimmune Paleo is too strict for my needs, but this is a good middle ground. The book itself is gorgeous, with photographs for many of the recipes. I ordered the paperback after reading some negative reviews about the hardcover version.I am so, so impressed with this cookbook! I can tell it was written by a trained chef. The instructions are clear, the recipes I've tried have all come out perfectly on the first try, and she uses simple, real food ingredients. Dishes are flavorful, and cook times are accurate. The only processed ingredients I've come across are things like soy-free vegan butter (I tolerate ghee, so I use that instead, but there's a wide range of ingredients that fit these parameters) and soy-free chocolate chips. She uses some creative ingredients to replace eggs: sweet potato puree, potato flakes, chia seeds, garbanzo bean liquid. We don't normally eat garbanzo beans, so I'm going to try an egg replacer in those recipes and see how they come out. But I appreciate that she doesn't call out specific brands or products in the recipes, though she does tell you her favorites in the beginning of the book. All of the ingredients in this cookbook are things that can be found easily at a normal grocery store or ordered online (beet sugar, for example). And if you don't have sensitivities to all of the foods omitted in this book, you could easily replace them with something different (dairy milk for coconut milk, wheat pasta for gluten-free pasta, cane sugar for beet sugar, etc.).I've had this book for a week and have already made about eight recipes out of it. They have all been huge hits with my family. If you're used to cooking from scratch, you won't be surprised by long ingredient lists or prep/cook times.Just a note about what this cookbook is NOT. It's not AIP. It's not low histamine. It's not keto or Paleo or low carb. It's exactly what it says it is on the cover. If you are looking for recipes that accommodate the allergies/sensitivities listed on the cover, then this is a fantastic cookbook. If you're looking for something that accommodates a completely different diet, then you should probably look for a cookbook specific to that diet. The author of this cookbook has done a phenomenal job of bringing variety back to the table for those of us with food sensitivities.
I can't believe this book is real. My family has quite a few allergies spread out amongst myself and my children and this book has been a godsend. It is almost impossible to find resources that cover all of our allergies, and this one does. I love Heathers blog, but this book seems to take it a step further, so that I know my family can eat every single thing in it. I am very appreciative since staying on our diet is very difficult but very necessary. I have one child who is deathly allergic to nuts and eggs and another with a lot of sensitivities. My health and especially my arthritis is so much better since I eat without gluten, dairy and eggs- plus I am going to try cutting out soy and cane sugar and see if that helps further.We have already made the spaghetti and meatballs which my family really loved and then I have made several salads for myself that were all delicious. My first big excitement came when I made the banana bread. It was so moist and good- I don't even think I would have ever known that it was gluten free. I can't wait to cook more from this book.Thank you for creating this book and caring about my family.
It's just such a convenient book to have because so many people have special requests now! I can just plan an event from start to finish with these dishes and not have to worry about things tasting like cardboard, or deal with labels, or worry about cross-contamination for those who are super-allergic. The recipes I've tried so far have all been really tasty. Also colorful, which is great for serving to company.And for those who do have allergies -- wow, what hope. The turnaround in her and her kids' health is an amazing story. I got rid of most of my cookbooks because I don't usually follow recipes, but this one is among the four or five I'm hanging on to. Great pictures too --it's so nice when just flipping through photos puts you in the mood to cook.
Great cookbook! Well written and beautiful pictures!!! The meatballs, pesto chicken and artichoke lemon hummus are just some of my favorites. Weather or not you have food allergies the recipes are delicious!!! Definitely a must have in my cookbook library!
Was diagnosed with "leaky gut" and candida overgrowth by my naturopath which means that while I've been trying to fix that, I've had to stay away from dairy, eggs, gluten, carbs, cane sugar, and other allergens. This cookbook has been a LIFESAVER!!!
My favorite cookbook! I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy a few years ago and wasn't sure how to adjust more complex recipes. What I love about Heather's book because I have other gluten free cookbooks, it's the right amount of work but incredible flavor. The fact that she's a chef comes through. I would highly recommend this book whether you have allergies or not.
I love this book. There are so many awesome recipes! I will say that sometimes it takes me a bit longer to prepare the meals than the time listed, but my family has loved every single thing I've made from this book and there are a couple of family members that are harder to please. The Carrot Pesto Pasta is my husband's favorite and he requests it regularly. The Prosciutto-Wrapped Chicken is so easy and absolutely delicious. We don't eat a lot of sugar, so I haven't made any of the desserts yet, but I'm SUPER pleased with this purchase.
This is a gift for everyone. Cooking for friends or family with allergies or just exploring some really tasty ideas. I have recommended this book to so many friends and patients. The recipes are not intimidating and represent really helpful alternatives for classic meals.I personally am waiting for the next volume...
