About the Author

John Simmons holds a B.A. in systematic ecology and an M.A. in Historical Administration and Museum Studies. In 1986, he completed the Collections Care Pilot Training Program (funded by the Bay Foundation) to become one of 30 people in the country to receive specialized training in conservation and collections care. He has spent a total of 30 years as collections manager in two of the largest collections of fluid preserved specimens in the United States (the California Academy of Sciences and the Biodiversity Research Center at the University of Kansas). He has published extensively on collections care topics and conducted seminars, workshops, and training programs in the US, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe on the care of natural history collections (his previous publications include the AAM standard reference on collections management policies).

I had to purchase this book for a 20th Century Art History class. With that being said, I would not have picked this book out for myself if I had the choice. It is insightful, but it is written very dry. I had a difficult time motivating myself to keep up with the readings in my class, because I was so disinterested in reading this textbook. I would only recommend if you are an Art History major, and even though I would head caution to how boring this book can be.

Great book, I got this for a class, but I ended up really enjoying it.

Nice text. It does not analyze the paintings in the text but the pictures are vibrant and accurately depicted. I purchased this for an art and literature class, as required by the professor

this is my major for school, fine art, so knowing everything I need to know about art history is absolutly needed. I love this book, it is very well written and the photos are pristine!

Cannot say too much, but thought it would be helpful to mention that this book was used in Art History 101 at the University of Pittsburgh (in 2004 at least). Chapters divided by type of art style. Was helpful for me as a student to follow and use as guideline/supplement for course. Not too dry, not overly poetic, supplemented with good amount of photos of artwok, minor note but pages are glossy, which I liked :) - great combo for me and others seeking introductory material of avant-garde art, almost good enough for the coffee table.

Excellent Condition. Extremely happy with my purchase.

I have just finished reading “Dark Chapter,” having stayed up late last night to complete it. I had to wait until 12:00 AM June 1st to receive it on my Kindle here in the U.S. Winnie Li did a remarkable job of writing this story based on a true dark episode in her life of a brutal rape in the afternoon during a hike in Belfast.I loved the way she was able to capture the story alternating between her report of the devastating incident and her feelings with that of her rapist a 15 year old troubled teenager. She being a Taiwanese American Harvard graduate living in London with a great sense of adventure and love for travel and he being an abused child with no education leading a criminal life. She included a good part of the story to the perpetrator to understand his impoverished wretched life.I felt her pain and the great support she received from her friends, the police and medical people in Belfast. And also the letdown from many in the London medical community while she went through her recovery which will probably leave scars for a lifetime.She has a message for everyone about rape, how it’s handled and the many more unreported rapes that never get reported throughout the world that go without justice being served. She also shares how she was able to get on with her life and sense of adventure.The author is a very brave and talented writer to bring this novel to fruition after many years of working on it. I recommend it to all readers and to bookclubs as there is so much to discuss about it.

Nobody can truly understand the experience of a rape survivor. Winnie Li's novel gives us a chance to try, with great effect. The story is a thriller and a page turner, bringing you into Vivian's life and that of her attacker, bringing you into this uniquely traumatic and heart-wrenching experience, bringing you into the unknowns of the recovery process, making you wish you could reach into the pages to help. It's painful, l but in the end inspiring, to know that Li's own resilience and strength helped to bring you this novel, helped to explain what it is like for a woman to experience sexual assault, to interact with the criminal justice and social support systems with their warts and flaws, to see her life and relationships in a whole new way. And in the end, you wish that everyone else could read this story because the world will be a better, more empathetic and supportive place if you do.

I can't praise this book enough. Not just that it addresses head-on one of the biggest social issues facing us today, but it's also a courtroom thriller and drama that rivals Grisham on his best day. Don't read this book if you don't want to think, want to feel, want to get angry or want to hope. It's that good.

I've never read a book quite like this. Although the subject of rape is by nature both awkward and traumatic, the book itself reads like a dance. First, you are introduced to the protagonist Vivian, then passages later to the villain Johnny. Their lives at first seem worlds apart until they collide into the horrific moment in the park. From that moment onward, it's like a new timeline is created with the intersection of their lives. There are thoughts of "what-if's" and "how could this happen?" Despite the nightmare, their lives must continue to unfold. Li has crafted a thoughtful and provoking book that opens up a safe space for discussion of sexual assault. Inspiring.

Poignant and brave novel that depicts a woman's rape and the aftermath of all she has to endure, the before and after of this life changing event. But what makes this story particularly arresting is that half the novel is also told from the rapists pov and allows us to understand what circumstances shaped this boy. The novel does not minimize or excuse the depravity of what he did, but it does allow the reader to see why he is this way in the first place.

Li has accomplished something really special in this novel -- it's gripping and frequently disturbing, but it's also empathetic and has thoughtful things to say about how our society handles sexual violence. I couldn't put it down.

About the Author

Clark Spencer Larsen heads the Department of Anthropology at Ohio State University, Columbus. A native of Nebraska, he received his B.A. from Kansas State University and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Clark’s research is in bioarchaeology, skeletal biology, and paleoanthropology. He has worked in North America, Europe, and Asia. He has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Northern Illinois University, Purdue University, and the University of North Carolina. Since 2001, he has been a member of the faculty at Ohio State, where he is a Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He teaches introductory physical anthropology, osteology, bioarchaeology, and paleoanthropology. Clark has served as president of the American Associations of Physical Anthropologists and as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. In addition to Our Origins, he has authored or edited 25 books and monographs, including Bioarchaeology; Interpreting Behavior from the Human Skeleton, Skeletons in Our Closet, Advances in Dental Anthropology; and A Companion to Biological Anthropology.

"LeBron James: The Making of an MVP'' chronicles James from his childhood in Akron all the way to superstardom in the NBA. It follows in a long line of wonderful books by Terry Pluto, the award-winning sports writer of the Akron Beacon-Journal and now the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Cleveland Cavaliers beat reporter Brian Windhorst is Pluto's co-author.Accompanying the text are 90 outstanding color photos taken by the staff of the Plain Dealer. They record James from high school -- where in addition to being a basketball prodigy, he was also a football player of note -- all the way to the NBA. In addition, factoid boxes called The LeBron File, revealing interesting tidbits about James, are scattered through the text.The authors spared no detail in this portrayal of James. In addition to covering LeBron's pro career, they have talked to many who made an impression on him during his high school career. That includes teachers at St. Vincent-St. Mary as well as coaches and teammates.These interviews reveal a side of LeBron that you won't find in newspapers. Apparently being blessed with an athletic body is not enough to gain the success he has had. The authors constantly show examples of LeBron's drive and character. Eager to please in any situation, LeBron comes across as an extremely positive role model. Even as a kid when he lived part-time with the Walker family, LeBron adapted to a family routine, fitting in and helping with household chores.Later, that kind of attitude would prove beneficial when he was not fully accepted by Cavaliers teammates during his rookie season. His best included not just scoring points but being the ultimate team player.Versatility is the name of his game. The authors point out that LeBron would be a star if he were shorter and could not score because he's such a good passer.Thus, he has the scoring ability of Michael Jordan and the passing ability of Magic Johnson or Larry Bird. So containing him defensively becomes quite the chore.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in James. This is so much more than just a basketball book. It probes the character and off-the-court life of a basketball superstar as much as his on-the-floor contributions.

After reading this book, I should have known that Lebron was a traitor - especially when he TURNED his back on his public school in Akron to play for a Catholic School. That was the first sign that he was a traitor. This book doesn't deserve any stars.
