This book's preface includes a 49 page introduction that is a masterful, scholarly exposition of the development of the Talmud, followed by 8 pages of numbered (115) notes. Some of the notes are just citations, but others are paragraphs of explanation, pointing you to pages within the book. At the end of the book is a very valuable 4 page timeline from 333 BCE to 642 CE highlighting events dealt with in the introduction, a glossary, 6 appendixes , 3 bibliographies, maps, a sacred writing index and a general index. These items alone are worth the price of the book. The body of the book consists of samples from each tractate in each of the six orders of the Talmud. The actual Talmud consists of 63 tractates, usually in 63 volumes, so it is impossible to really condense that into one 700 plus page 5 X 8 paperback, but for a taste of what the Talmud is like, plus a superb series of pages explaining how it came to be and how it is arranged, this book more than fills the bill.

The book is a lie but good for studying. Jesus says God does not support man made rules and this book is clearly made of rules but its good to read about jewish history

Rabbi Solomon's book is an introduction to the Talmud, the second most important written text in Judaism. The Talmud is second in importance to the Bible, and it seeks to apply the words of the Bible(Jewish Bible only contains what is generally referred to as Old Testament)to the lives of the Jewish People. He gives a lengthy Introduction in the book, in which he discusses how to read the Talmud, its structure, the history of its compilation, the styles of writing in it, the people who contributed to it, its theology, its relationship to Christianity, and how it was transmitted. To me, this was the most important part of the book, and I agree with the previous reviewer, that this portion of the book is worth the price of the book, alone. What follows are examples of text from each of the sections of the Babylonian Talmud, which is divided into Orders and Tractates. There are brief explanations given to aid you in understanding the examples of the text given. Following the examples of text, there is supplementary material, including a glossary, a discussion of the weights and measures mentioned in the Talmud, a lengthy bibliography. and maps. The entire book contains well over 800 pages and is well worth the purchase price. One warning; if you expect to learn the Talmud from this book, you will be disappointed. The title of the book is "The Talmud A Selection", and after you read a few of the examples of the text from the Talmud, you will quickly come to the conclusion, that, it is impossible to really learn the Talmud, without a long, in depth study of it, with the aid of an instructor. This book is a great starting line if you wish to run the distance.

This selection of passages from the Talmud provides a good introduction to the reasoning present and the process by which the law was created. It certainly cannot completely substitute for a full Talmud, but it quite a good introduction.

Great book. Giving you the history of the Talmud in the introduction. Then the whole, book in a very very short version but without missing anytractate. The truth is that the teachings, stories, anecdotes, allegory, literature, science, law,and much more of the Talmud are so much interesting and nearly life time studies. Nevertheless, this book introducing each tractate and what is about.

This book will be one of those books I will refer to frequently since it helps to explain the Bible. I am enjoying using this book.It isn't the easiest read, but it is very informative.

I have always liked Pogue's books, and I expect this one is no exception. The problem is with the kindle version - There isnt an index, and the so-called "table of contents" seems to be an almost unformatted 35 page list of what must be every paragraph header in the book that must have been computer generated, by a program written by a retarded programmer in a few days. If you want to read it cover to cover like a novel that's no problem ,but thats not how most people will want to use it. I ended up buying the paperback and now plan to try to get the kindle purchase price refunded.

After 32 years of using Microsoft operating systems (DOS and then Windows) I'm switching to Apple. The ease-of-use lure and the easy interoperability between Macs, iPads and iPhones is too great, and one of my Windows computers has reached the end of its useful life. It's not hard to just pick up a Mac laptop and go, but I'm part geek and I know the a lots of ways to save time and exert control over files in Windows. I followed David Pogue for years in the NY Times and his writing is the only think that would ever attract me to Yahoo. So I bought his Missing Manual book rather than Mac for Dummies. The Missing Manual has been a wonderful way to get all the details about using the latest (mid-2015) version of the Mac operating system. It's clear, takes topics in logical order, and deeply thorough -- so deep that someone less geeky might want to skim over quite a lot, or buy something that doesn't go into the topics in as much detail. The Kindle version of the book also offers links to the Missing Manual website, where there's more stuff as well as links to useful plug-ins for OS X, and links to other useful sites.

I love how David Pogue writes. It is so easy to figure out how to do things. I moved my itunes to a shared folder and can now access all of my music, which was under different users. Thanks David.

At almost 2 inches thick and 800 some pages, this is not light reading, but I've found, like most "The Missing Manual Books", this to be very good reference work. Explanations are clear and helpful, providing step by step guidance in many cases. It is not an intimidating engineering text, but a very good source of information about a complex operating system. In the rare cases it doesn't answer your questions, at least it will give you a clear enough understanding of the topic to ask intelligent questions at the Genius Bar. In the past I have bought books in this series for each Apple Operating System as I have updated to new versions, and will continue to do so. I recommend without reservation.

I have been a Mac user for nearly 10 years and have found Pogue's guide to be very useful in understanding "What's new" in different versions of the operating systems and to generally have a good reference book where information is generally easy to find and also to understand.A new user to Mac system would likely start with first section on the OS X desktop and then move into the later sections that focus on conducting specific tasks and applications, including configuring your machine and using different programs such as maps, mail, quick time player, etc. The book is well organized and the 5 page table of contents really can get you to the section you need. The index is VERY detailed at 30 pages and can get you to specific topics.I doubt most users are going to read this book all rather start at the beginning for an overview and then skim through the remainder of the book to see what it covers, stopping at sections of interest and then coming back as needed.The book is well illustrated, and while covering a lot of material, is not overwhelming in detail. There are lots of helpful illustrations to go with very clear text.A highly recommended book!

Similar to David Pogue's other works of similar names, not really intended to be read as a cover to cover book, this work is another encyclopediac work invaluable as a desk reference for details of IOS X functions. I mean that as a compliment, not that the book contains a lot of useless detail!So far, I have had occasion to search this edition for detail about a half dozen times ... the more I see of David Pogue's work, the more I am impressed by it. The MAC was undoubtedly engineered by a whole team of engineers; how anyone could keep track of all the resulting details is more than I can imagine, but David Pogue has succeeded ... the work is an invaluable reference, well indexed and indispensable for my desk.I highly recommend this for your desk, too ...

Sure, it's got a lot of good stuff in it, but there is missing content. I had a puzzling symptom that I couldn't work through: Why did I no longer hear the sosume chime on startup? Likely just a symptom, but of what? I don't ignore warning lights on my dashboard or instrument panel, so ....? When a friend suggested that I should "zap the PRAM" I remembered having done this some time back while using an earlier version of the OS.Eventually a Mac professional talked me through the procedure, but one or two sentences in the book would have saved a whole lot of beating around the bush.Then there is (or isn't?) "Photos." I no longer need to use Photoshop all that much but I do need a substitute. Page 409 in my copy of the book refers me to a free PDF from www.missingmanuals.com, but if it's there it's eluded me.

Years ago, I bought the original Mac for Dummies by David Pogue. It was simple, clear, concise and funny. I loved his writing style and learned how to really use the Mac his book. It was brilliant. But that was a long time ago.The Kindle version is waste of money. I'm frankly surprised that David Pogue would have his name on it. The index has no links, it's just an unformatted list. The search function is a joke. Words that should be included are not.And the language? Here's how they describe the Setup Assistant: "...it’s called the Setup Assistant (Figure A-3), and it’s meant to interview you about which features you’d like turned on..." Interview? REALLY?!

Man, can this guy write!!! He holds all of my attention, from start to finish and leaves me so anxious for the next book to arrive! Sienna is a heroine we all love, but the poor gal just can't catch a break...she surrendered and is put in prison, where almost everyone is out to get her. And of course, she is suppressed! Does she survive...well, of course, it's Sienna we are talking about! But now she's in even bigger trouble...what will happen next? Hurry, Robert Crane, hurry! September can't come fast enough for me!!!

I have enjoyed this entire series from the beginning. I don't know if it's possible, but I find myself wishing that Sienna would somehow get back Wolfe and the gang! I miss them so much! I've enjoyed reading every adventure and obstacle Sienna has gone through and overcome. I look forward to reading more! I'd love to see her find love and happiness with her family of friends.

She is absolutely being railroaded. As we knew she would be. There wasn't a chance she's get a fair trial. We knew we she was headed. But the question comes if her response to the situation would have been this way. Yes she's violitile, but scary unfairly violent? Hmmm. Entertaining as always. But while I've felt right in with her for 31 books, I just felt weird while reading this. Is it because there was always justice behind it or reasons. I don't know. I'm not going anywhere, but right back for more of her story, but unlike my usual response of breathless wow, I'm kind of huh, well that happened.

This has been a long journey with Sienna. I’m not going to do any spoilers here, but there is redemption after the last book book where it kinda felt like she quit. Things are coming to a head. I think that as much as everyone loves these characters that the series needs to march to a close. That doesn’t mean in the next book, two or three. But there needs to be a logical progression to an amazing ending.

A good, solid story in the Sienna Nealon saga! It did not go exactly where I expected it to go, but it certainly did not disappoint, as "Driven" did. Sienna is in prison, without powers, and totally in her element! I think that is enough spoilers for one review. Read this installment, and you will not be disappointed! As usual, this book leaves you waiting for the next one... Well, we'll just have to wait won't we, but in my case it's a done deal. I pre-ordered "Hero" before even writing this review

I really enjoy this series. I read the book so quickly I re-read it and then decided to start over with Book 1 and am now in Out of the Box, Book 2! Hoping I am able to get everything re-read until the newest book comes out. I like the story lines and the relationships between characters and all the agency business. I have enjoyed every book. Thanks for a great read.

Five stars for the story, but three stars for editing. There were a lot more errors that slipped through than there usually are. Sienna Nealon is as tough and mouthy as always, even without her powers to back up the mouth. Very good storytelling and the action and drama are great. I would recommend this story to anybody who enjoys great dialog and really good action.

Looking for smart sarcastic heroine and a great supporting cast of characters good and bad ;-), here you go. If you like Piers Anthony, Jim Butcher and Tom Clancy style writing well you should check out this series. Smart well thought out storylines, fun characters that make you laugh out loud but also have you questioning just what is up around the next corner is all in this series. Once you read one you will be going back to the books that started it all, The Girl in the Box portion of the series and loving every crazy adventure and twist of a story. Mr. Crane has a great ability to tell a story and from series to series can be completely fresh in his writing style.

Books I have consumed over the years all embrace an inherent passion so evident in these 350 pages of the author's life prevails.The first chapter features Susan Thunder, a military computer enthusiast, whose fascination with telephone networks would evolve into knowledge of the working of the Bell System that exceed most employee ranking. Despite her intellectual talents inherent social failings would find her street walking for pecuniary sexual endeavors. She finally evolved into alcohol and heroin use supported financially by money for sex. Years later she found her salvation by harnessing the challenges of military computer systems, a passion that became socially and financially rewarding.Later pages reflect Nasa in preparation for a war of the future fought with computer hackers and related computer viruses.

Before I start my review, let me comment on some of the other reviewers (the 1 and 2 star ones). Some of them comment that the author was too involved in the famous capture of Kevin Mitnick. While that is true, they seem to forget that this capture was in 1996 while the book was published in 1991. It seems they have not read the book before writing the review.Back to the book. Cyberpunk contains three different hacker stories. The first one of Kevin Mitnick ending up with his first capture (not the 1996 one). The second is of Pengo, the German hacker who leaked information to Russia. The third is of Robert Morris who created the famous internet worm that caused "the internet to go down" (well...)The first part is a story called "Kevin Mitnick: The Dark-side Hacker" which describes the early hacking of perhaps the best know hacker Kevin Mitnick. The authors of this book are not technical experts at hacking and that is readable in the book. The technical details are missing or often not incredibly correct (or something uninteresting is presented as if its a big thing). The book mainly focuses on the social relationships between people.The second part if "Pengo and Project Equalizer" which describes Pengo, the German hacker who had sold some of its information (and the VMS source code) to East Germany. This story is the other side of "The Cuckoos nest" by Cliff Stoll. The Cuckoos nest describes how Cliff tracked the hacker in Germany whereas Cyberpunk describes what was going on between the hackers and how they ended up selling information to Germany. Its an interesting story again, though... the hackers didn't seem to use much (if any) technical hacks, so if you are looking for technical hacking info, this is not the book.The third story surprised me. It was the story of Robert Morris who wrote the internet worm in 1988. It surprised me because the history behind the story was interesting, how Robert grew up and how his interest in computer security grew over time. It was amusing to me how a well-constructed piece of software can cause so much trouble because it was badly written :)To get back to the criticism from other reviewers about the author being involved. Partly these comments are invalid (see above) and partly the are valid. John Markoff was deeply involved during all of the stories. He was in contact with the law enforcement during the Mitnick story, he was a friend of Cliff Stoll during the second story. During the third story, he was called by Cliff Stoll and was a friend of Bob Morris, the father of Robert Morris, and was one of the earliest people to discover who created the internet worm. From that perspective, the book is not a neutral journalist perspective as you might expect.I was thinking of rating this book between 3 and 4 stars. 4 because I enjoyed reading it. 3 because of the non-neutrality and the lack of correct technical details. I chose 4 because of the epilogue (written by the other author, Katie Hafner) which described the follow-up of the three stories and asks really valid questions related to whether Mitnick was really the famous bad hacker he is depicted as.Worth reading, but there are probably better books on the subject (as other reviewers also suggest)

Having just read Stoll's Cuckoo's Egg, I'm amazed at the large number of supporting details that are completely wrong in the second section. It certainly casts doubt on the veracity of the facts in the other two sections and leads me to believe little if any fact checking was done on the book. As an overview, it's certainly interesting and well-written.

I bought this book because I was interested in human aspects of these stories (RTM especially), more than the technical side. I found it very satisfying, and more. I could have not imagined it is so detailed and even ... entertaining.Reading this book I've felt again that nice atmosphere I first met while reading the superlative Cliff Stoll's "The Cuckoo's Egg". Indeed, those of you who have luckily read it too, will find Stoll himself here in an important role in the chapter about RTM...

Great book, particularly the RTM section which is related to Professor Robert T. Morris. That part of the story is amazing!

I found it informative mostly for the detailed biography of Robert Morris, and a little bit of Kevin Mitnick's, as well.

Very "dramatic". I would say 10% of "Cyberpunk" is worth the read."Cyberpunk" is probably good for somebody that does not have IT background because it is written like novel and this is exactly where this book belongs. If you are looking for a book that describes actual events don't waste your time on "Takedown" or "Cyberpunk". If you read only "Cyberpunk" you will have wrong perception of hackers as lunatics with prostitute girlfriends surrounded by a drugs. Markoff has some imagination I can tell you that.

This is the best book I've seen on lettering. It includes a wide variety to lettering styles and is an easy to use guide to improve your art.

Good examples. Nicely illustrated

I like this book more as eye candy than as instructional. The different alphabet projects are more of a "here's how the artist worked on this alphabet" than it is tips for recreating the project yourself.It has all of the usual pages you'd expect in the beginning of the book like what supplies the author feels work best. The projects themselves consist of usually 1-4 pictures showing the artist working on the project. There aren't any step by step tips. Most of the instructions are pretty identical - create a grid and practice. The most useful aspect of the book are probably just the images of the full alphabets to use as inspiration or practice copying.I got this book from the library and doubt I'll buy it, but it's a good book to skim if you get the chance.

The cover of this book alone gets me excited and in a crafty mood. There are so many to tutorials and do it yourself projects (plus inspiration). Any type of hand lettering from basic to extremely detailed. I've included a photo of one of my favorites. This is a perfect resource guide as I want to hand letter and upload it to silhouette to make custom graphics. There are also tutorials on embellishments and flourishes too!I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you "just hafta" rock `n roll, like your rock `n roll raw, gritty, and with excellent and sometimes powerfully relevant lyrics, this is the CD to own. It contains nearly all CCR's greatest hits, and the ones that aren't on this CD can be found on "Chronicle, Volume 2."As hard as it is for me to pick one song on this CD as a favorite, (they're all that good,) I give a nod to "I heard it Through the Grapevine," a remake of the Marvin Gaye classic. It combines a great blues vocal arrangement with good, hard-edged guitar playing, and drums that will "roll your socks down."This CD proves two things: 60's and 70's rock ROCKS, and Creedence Clearwater Revival still rules 60's and 70's rock!

I had this collection about three times previously on each vinyl, cassette and cd. In fact it was the only Creedence collection I ever had on vinyl save for a few of their singles. Then about a year after I purchased this on vinyl, I was surprised with a cassette copy for my birthday-We're talking mid-to-late '80s here after frontman John Fogerty's comeback. Then about 10 years later I got this on cd which I later forsook the Creedence boxed set which contained all of their recordings including their earlier incarnations as Tommy Fogerty and The Blue Velvets and The Golliwogs plus the two live albums[one of which made after Tom Fogerty's departure]. This time I got this collection for my girlfriend/bandmate and was she thrilled. She never had anything by Creedence in her collection before so this was a perfect choice.From start to finish this is the greatest collection of CCR. Kicking off this set is two covers off their debut album, Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q"[The shortened version. You'll find the second half on Chronicles, Vol. 2] and Screamin' Jay Hawkins'[No relation] "I Put A Spell On You"-How they rock on this one! They're followed up with eighteen more songs- one Creedence classic after another. Their biggest classic "Proud Mary", to start with, was the one I remember best BEFORE Ike & Tina Turner reinterpreted it totally different and this the most covered Creedence song of all, even Elvis Presley did it, too. The only one other exception than those covers Creedence interpreted was none other than the Marvin Gaye classic "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" in its entire 11-minute glory not to mention a 7-minute guitar break from John Fogerty[who later used a short part of that break on his own song "Change In The Weather" from the 1986 album Eye Of The Zombie and later re-recorded for a Blue Ridge Rangers follow up album in the new millennium]. Each song here gives the greatest instrumentations out of four musicians[Save for the last two songs-"Sweet Hitch-Hiker" and "Someday Never Comes" as a three-piece]. John Fogerty fires up on lead guitar[He knew how make that Rickenbacker work other than a Les Paul], Tom Fogerty hangs on time with rhythm guitar and rounding out the rhythm section and making it work are drummer Doug Clifford and bassist Stu Cook. For a northern California band they knew how to work some southern twang in the act as well as R&B.Personally, I prefer this collection over the other Chronicles collection which contains more covers as well as other Creedence classics. So for the best singles collection of CCR-Go for it here and you won't be disappointed!

Creedence Clearwater Revival was an amazing band that flawlessly blended country, soul, blues and rock, With the success and string of hits the band had, it's a crime that they are often overlooked when discussions are raised about the greatest bands of all time.Almost anyone that has recorded music at this point has a greatest hits collection out. Some of them never even had a hit at all, and most have a few hits and then a string of songs few people, except for die-hard fans, have ever heard of.You want a true greatest hits album? Consider this: of the 20 tracks on this album, every single one can be heard today on either oldies or classic rock radio. Who else can say that? Who else can say that they have a collection of 20 songs that can all be heard on the radio 40 to 50 years later? That alone should tell you how absolutely amazing Creedence was.If you don't have the original studio records, this collection is an absolute must for any serious music fan.

One cannot maintain the posted speed limit when one suddenly has the opening riffs of "Goin' Up Around the Bend" blasting out of one's all-wheel-drive granny/grocery "SUV" speakers.One must be vigilant, of course, especially when getting a stern look from someone close to your own age.At that moment, one must smugly nod, saw-LOOT and laugh. Enjoy life while you can, my friends.

First copy I received had serious surface noise, unacceptably warped discs. Second copy was perfect but the discs were dirty with paper cutting from the sleeves and reauired two passes each side with a roller to make playable.The sound quality is what made them 4 star despite the hitches

As I had bought both volume 1 & 2, this write-up will benefit both. I have always been a big fan of CCR. Still am. I not only buy cd's to play on my equipment.....(of which I have 13 players, including 3 Blu-ray players and 2 that play everything from wherever). I not only play them there, but I also transfer them to iTunes. I now have more than 8000 songs there I have hundreds of lp records of which I choose recordings I really like, buy the cd copies and load them onto iTunes.

This album is superb! I have enjoyed listening to it all the way through over and over and will continue to do so. Just get this, put it on, and enjoy. All the classics from ccr. Wish born on the bayou made the list but it is a minor gripe. All of the songs here are fantastic! Good stuff here for any rock fan! $15 on vinyl is what i payed and play. Its a steal.

If you like John Fogarty, you'll LOVE THIS CD. This is John and CCR at it's finest with all of the songs you'll love and remember. Twenty of the BEST OF CCR - what more do you need? Unlike a few others have said, the quality of this CD is great, the sound is pure and clear. However, there is one problem - - this CD causes your foot to get a "little heavy" on the gas pedal, so with that, I'll say "BUYER BEWARE!"
