Catherine Barsotti and Robert Johnston --- husband and wife --- give thoughtful Christians a book full of tools to help them view select movies (33 in all; the oldest released in 1982) through a theological or philosophical lens.FINDING GOD IN THE MOVIES starts with an informative introduction that discusses the film genre and theological approaches to film. What makes a good film? "Head, gut, and heart. The best movies will engage the whole person." How does a viewer find God in the movies? "Unpack the story.... What is more primary in the way the story is shaped? (1) Is it the plot...? (2) Is it the characters...? (3) Is it the point of view, where a story is given value by the perspective of the narrator(s)...? Or (4) is it the atmosphere...?...Concentrate your critical attention on where the filmmakers have centered their attention. By doing this, you will prove a more receptive viewer of the story and perhaps the Story."Each of the 33 movie-chapters starts with a two- or three-page "synopsis and theological reflection" --- a review. This is followed by "dialogue texts" (relevant biblical passages), "discussion questions," "clip conversations" (more discussion questions but about specific scenes), and several pages of "bonus material," which includes interesting behind-the-scenes information about the making and makers of the film. He mentions the movie as a story teller in which people communicate their values and worldviews. He, also, teaches us what the christian movies are and how christians can watch the films; the christian movies are what deal with the real human stories and what show the reality afresh. And, when we watch the movies, we, as chrsitians, have to see the christian values such as humanity, friendship, forgiveness, reconciliation, etc. In addition to these strengths, the most wonderful character of this book is the excellent complete film study guide. I enthusiastically recommend this book for all people who are interested in popculture and its application to their real lives.

I remember the news stories about the RJR Nabisco LBO back when it was happening but didn't give them much notice at the time. After reading a few Michael Lewis books and becoming interested in all things Wall Street, I decided to read this to finally discover what all those news stories had been about. I wasn't disappointed!This is a really good book. My only issue with it (and it's really my own mental limitations as opposed to any flaw in the book) is that the cast of characters and companies is so large that I had to re-read sections and take time to digest it all. I got overwhelmed at times and wanted to break out a white board to sketch out an overview. It's a great read though and really hard to put down.

This should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in understanding the current financial world. The authors write a gripping account of the outsized personalities and egos of the 1980s LBO boom using their exhaustive list of contacts. The book reads like a movie as the personalities leap out of the page. A lot of today's issues are explored: real business vs the financial world, the possibilities and risks of leverage, captured boards and profligate executives vs activist investors.The authors pass along such perfect lines like, when speaking about RJR's expense account manager, "the only man who can take an unlimited budget and exceed it." I also liked Ross Johnson's summary of Wall Street: "Never play by the rules. Never pay in cash. And never tell the truth."

While not the same story as Enron, the corporate games and minimal concern for employees at RJR Nabisco was equally appalling. If you read about the Savings and Loan crisis you will also see much in common. I was only vaguely aware of this story and was riveted by it. I had trouble putting this book down. It's thorough while still an easy read and you don't need to be a student of economics to understand it). It's also scary because this is but one of very many examples of corporate, institutional, and wall street greed and self involvement that, unfortunately, is way too prevalent.

From Forstman Little's Crusade Against Junk Bonds (caps intended), to First Boston's out-of-nowhere bid that inevitably set up the KKR win, this book is filled with an abyss of unputdownable plots and subplots that leaves one edu-tained from start to finish.One of the best things about this book is how effectually the authors try to get inside the heads of the players and mini-players in a manner that adds both color to the story telling and insight into the deal. Like this passage:"Around eleven o'clock they were joined by Matthew Rosen, the team's thirty-six-year-old tax counsel. Rosen was a lawyer from the 'Thirtysome-thing' crowd: Italian suits, tassled loafers, an office crammed with modern-art [Kandisky likenesses I hear my mind wondering as a reader?], the kind of early 1970s rabble-rouser embarrassed to tell his Swarthmore class reunion he now made millions sniffing out tax loopholes for corporate takeovers".Some educational takeaways include the role of junk bonds, the intricacies as well as benefits/costs of LBOs with the help of management (i.e. friendly) vs. hostile takeovers, moral hazard/conflicts of interest issues involving banks and financial advisors, the crucial role of good valuation work and thorough due diligence, managing public relations, deal confidentiality, managing Board of Directors relations, information security and bid strategy.
