Matthew the Poor continues to offer practical advice on how one ought to live a Christian life. He explains I this book that he was not called to give theological sermons. He speaks as if he was talking to a friend.Each chapter stands on its own and Matthew the Poor discusses a specific topic. The translation is excellent, it is easy to read and comprehend from an English perspective, however the spiritual insight is deep and his guidance is direct and will challenge you. But if you are able to follow is advice then you will be a little loser to the kingdom of heaven

Father Matta was a Christian monk of our time, he lived in the desert of Egypt like the first christian ermits and was the abbot of saint Macarius monastery. However he had a deep understanding of men's and women's minds of our time, and knew how to transmit the spiritual path of the early Christianity to both lay people and monks. Heartbreaking, beautiful story!

I got such a kick out of this book. The story is really multiple stories, alongside and within one another. Most good books have lots of threads, but in this case the threads parallel each other beyond what a reader would expect. So many odd or outrageous things happen, and yet they fit together. I laughed aloud many times, although I don't think the book was meant to be funny. Usually I was laughing at comments characters made, comments that had the same effect on me as a raw egg falling from the sky and splatting onto a sidewalk - just crazy, surprising choices of words and actions. There's also plenty of sadness in Walk Two Moons, and it's deep sadness that may upset some readers. But the characters are ultimately resilient enough to push forward.

My 6th graders fell in love with this novel. As an educator, I was thrilled to have a classroom beg me to continue reading past their assigned English period (I teach all subjects, so my students stay in my classroom all day).It's a novel that does a masterful job of exploring the topics of love, loss, and identity. It's quirky and powerful. Many of my students have already experienced at least one significant loss in their lives and they were able to work through many of their emotions with the help of this book. At the end of the novel, I had a few students in tears and the classroom erupted in applause. I am looking forward to reading this novel again with my new students.

In the book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, it has three stories in one book. The story of Sal traveling across the country with her grandparents, the story of Sal’s friend Phoebe and her family and the memories she has of her mother and family.Due to the complexity and the maturity of the book, this book would be best for students in 5th to 8th grade. This book deals with a lot of hard topics that could be tough for children to fully understand. Sal’s narrative style is kind of hard to understand because she bounces around a lot from story to story and you are not sure whether she is speaking to her grandparents or if she is thinking in her head.Overall, this book this book can be relatable to students who are trying figure themselves out. This book story also demonstrates that sometimes things do not always turn out as we hope they do.

This was a beautiful story. My sixth grader was required to read it for school. He loved the story, it was definitely was a favorite of his and mine. Although it did not make him cry it made me cry. I recommend this book for anyone.

This book was EXCELLENT! I read this with a tween I dearly love, and we didn't want to put it down. I bought the audible version for said tween and I cannot tell you how many times it has been listened to; let's just say that it has been listened to so many times that I thought it a disservice to not post a review. The names that Sharon Creech chose for her characters are as entertaining as the book, itself. It is a wild tale full of heart, mystery, love and intrigue. We both HIGHLY recommend this book.

My son and I read this book together. It's a slow start but pushing through the initial chapters, the story gains momentum. The author takes care to build each character within the developing plot. It is a good book to discuss character traits, Native Americans, and some of life's difficult topics like death and some others (don't want to spoil it). Excellent read along with your child to have teachable moments. My son is 11 and it seemed to be right on par with his age.

While on a road-trip trek from Ohio to Idaho, with the trees whispering for her to `hurry, rush, hurry' Sal is recounting the story of her friend, Phoebe Winterbottom and the lunatic who changed her life.But in the telling of Phoebe's tale, Sal is learning the truth of the old proverb: "Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins" . . . because Phoebe's story is entangled in Sal's own, and what happened when her mother left for the badlands.`Walk Two Moons' by Sharon Creech was first published in 1994, and won the Newbery Medal in 1995. It has since become an American children's classic, and for good reason.I read the last chapter of Sharon Creech's `Walk Two Moons' aboard the Number-57 tram. Lumbering towards Lonsdale Street I started to cry, and by the time I'd arrived at my North Melbourne destination I was attracting curious stares from my fellow commuters. This book wrecked me, in the best possible way.We meet Salamanca "Sal" Tree Hiddle shortly after her father has uprooted her from Bybanks, Kentucky and the last memories of her mother. Now they live in Euclid, Ohio next-door to Margaret Cadaver and her blind mother. But when the book begins Sal is at the beginning of a road-trip journey to Idaho with her Gram and Gramps. Something in the trees is compelling Sal to rush across the American heartland, to get to Idaho and her mother . . . but along the way Gram and Gramps want to be entertained. So Sal starts telling them a story. She tells them about her new life in Euclid, where she has befriended the prudish Phoebe Winterbottom, whose family is undergoing a change somewhat similar to the one Sal's little family went through not so long ago. Sal also talks about Ben Finney, who imagines a soul similar to her own and keeps trying to plant a kiss on Sal's lips.`Walk Two Moon's is a novel of beautiful equilibrium; at once terribly sad, and terribly funny. In recounting the story of Phoebe's lunatic, who brings her family crashing down, Sal paints a wonderful picture of her best friend; a young girl whose wild imagination is rivalled only by her snobbish temperance. Sal recounts Phoebe's story like a puzzle she's piecing together for her Gram and Gramps - explaining the cryptic messages that were first left on the Winterbottom porch, and then the various investigations Phoebe and Sal conducted searching for the lunatic.But Phoebe's story has a deeper meaning for Sal, who draws parallels between the Winterbottom's struggles and the events that led to her mother leaving Sal and her father behind to go on the very same Idaho road-trip Sal is currently undertaking with her grandparents.`Walk Two Moons' is glorious. For a long time it feels almost like Sal's story is a collection of vignettes as she recounts the many memories she has of her mother, the enigmatic Chanhassen Hiddle. So many things trigger memories for Sal, something as harmless as a blackberry pie holds a landmine of remembrance.But in teasing out the memories, and questioning the events that led up to her mother leaving home, Sal's story begins to take shape. I wouldn't say that `Walk Two Moons' is ever a strictly linear story - though Sal's recounting Phoebe's lunatic tale is a fairly straightforward narrative, Sal explaining her own story takes many twists and turns. She's a young woman who has gone through a lot of life changes in a very short amount of time - not least of which includes moving away from the only home she has ever known, a new shivery awareness of Ben Finney and the colossal hole her mother's leaving gouged in her heart. It often happens that to understand one component of her changing world, Sal has to go back and look at old memories with a fresh perspective. This is a rather lovely facet of childhood-into-adulthood that Creech explains at Sal's slow and steady pace.Half-way through the book, you will begin to feel a niggling of sadness. Something is on the horizon, and the same way that Sal hears trees telling her to `rush, hurry' or `slow, slow' - so too will the sadness of this book start whispering. It's a creeping kind of sadness - beautifully teased by Creech increment by increment. But there's an overarching theme in the book, concerning the Greek myth of Pandora's Box, a subject Sal's class are studying in English. By the end, tears in my eyes, I decided that `Walk Two Moons' was a literary Pandora's Box in itself - that although there was incredible sadness and pain within, the slivers of hope are the lasting effect of Creech's wonderful novel. The lessons Sal learns, her singing tree, blackberry kisses, the shivery feeling Ben ignites and Phoebe's lunatic are all so beautifully hopeful that the sadness, though sharp, does not prevail - hope does.

I purchased a class set of Walk Two Moons after reading it with my grandson in 6th grade. It is a fun book that keeps the pre and early teen reader interested. It is a fun adventure of a young girl who travels with her grandparents. Untilimately, the story leaves room for rich discussion about more grown up things. I am using it for a High School 9th and 10yth grade Special Ed Reading class. The interest is high, but the reading level is more appropriate for the reader who struggles.

buyer beware.. there are two physical versions of this book, the hardback and paperwork, and the content is not the same. i purchased the paperback version to save a few bucks, but it turns out the paperback is the "global edition" and the problem questions at the end of the chapters are not the same.not sure amazon would list these on the same page if they're not the same book..

Probably one of the worst text books I've ever read. It's like reading a giant contract. It's gotten to a point where I now only study the power point presentations that the professor gave us and google search results to get through class.I was also fortunate to have a couple of classes that had chapters that overlapped the chapters in this course. I used the books from the other classes to understand that material that was presented in this book. The book is pretty much useless and I only use it as a last resort.

I've only read a few chapters but mistakes are not uncommon in this book. It still gets the point across though

Great book. Up to date with a wealth of information on systems analysis and design. Great for college and as a reference for your job in IT related fields.

I enjoy historical fiction, and this is among the best I've read. A long, languish, character driven novel, set in Europe up to and including the first world war. The story centres on a massively wealthy finance family of Jews, spread across Europe, and can only be based on none other than the Rothschilds.Long drawn in places, too many details in other places, and loose ends are my only complaints.

Historical Heaven,for any one who enjoys complex characters with individuality.Knowledge of gardening and finance of the era was fascinating!Would recommend to all as a great read.

Good historical fiction about the Rothschilds and the Western World.

I enjoyed this family saga inspired by the Rothschild family. Since I haven’t read anything about the Rothschilds and the author didn’t give us an Afterword as to how closely she followed their lives, I can’t say how true this story was to theirs. It was very interesting that the family set up banks in most European capitals, and kept everything very strictly controlled by family members only in the administrative positions.Marriages were arranged, so Greta, in Vienna, was slated to marry her cousin, Albert, in London. They met each other on the day of the wedding. Greta is described as the fun-loving “wild child” of her family, and Albert was the serious, butterfly-hunting, usually dour, opposite. Obviously, we are treated to years of friction and mutual disdain. Little by little, an appreciation grows and, well, you know!The story going on in the background is the lead-up to World War I. In the beginning, Kaiser Wilhelm is the German leader, but upon his death, Hitler rises to power. The Goldbaums have two things affecting their lives. They’re Jewish, and they control most of the gold in Europe. The countries fighting Germany need money, which they borrow from Goldbaum banks. England is reluctant to be drawn into the conflict, and will need what the Goldbaum’s have if they are. Social life for the Goldbaums goes on almost as usual all during the saber-rattling.At last, America is drawn into the war. Lots of financial dealings are on the table. The Goldbaum main characters find themselves involved in all aspects of the battle, while the Goldbaum women hold the homefront intact in London. There is lots of gardening going on. Descriptions of the gardens are lyrical, and of the war, graphic. Up to the last 50 pages, one is not certain how the family will be at the end of the war.This is a comfortable, sometimes page-turning read. For lovers of historical fiction who are tired of the Romanovs, Victoria and Henry the VIII, this is a good one - interesting and different!

Author Natasha Solomons offers readers a studied look at how war affects the rich and famous in her unnecessarily drawn-out novel House of Gold.In Austria, Greta Goldbaum ponders marriage—her own, that is. As a member of the influential Goldbaum family, Greta knows her lot in life is set. She’s expected to marry within the family to keep the name, and their Jewish heritage, intact. Marrying inside of the family also allows for all the money to stay in one place, and no one can deny that when it comes to money the world tips its hat to the Goldbaums.Greta isn’t so sure about what’s expected of her, however. She’s agreed to marry her distant cousin, Albert, from England, and she’ll have to leave her beloved Vienna for the damp English weather. She just hasn’t made up her mind yet about how much she likes Albert.Life in England brings a drastic change and, in some ways, a welcome one. Greta escapes her overbearing mother, for one thing. Also, despite missing home, she starts to feel freedom in her new country; the kind of freedom she didn’t feel in Austria. When Greta and Albert’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, her mother-in-law offers a distraction: a garden for Greta to call her own. Greta puts her attention and energy into it, and like a young seedling given the right space her marriage with Albert also begins to blossom.Even their budding romance can’t shade itself from the threat of World War I, which brings a whole host of complications. The greatest one comes in the monetary cost: war officials count on the resources the Goldbaum family can provide, even while discriminating against “common” Jews all in the same breath. The double standard makes Albert and some of his other cousins think twice about just where the money is going, but no one can doubt the power of currency. If it’s gone, the only thing that matters is that it’s been spent. The Goldbaums must do all they can to preserve their fortune or risk becoming destitute themselves.Author Natasha Solomons gives readers some pleasant tidbits about life as a member of the most elite level of society. The Goldbaums consume lavish meals. They travel in private transportation of every form. They own hothouses where teams of gardeners force flowers and fruits and vegetables to grow at the family’s pleasure, regardless of the season.However, the story itself meanders from topic to topic. Readers will go from scenes of Greta and Albert and the awkwardness of the first months of their semi-arranged marriage to scenes between senior Goldbaum men as they discuss politics and finance. Thrown into the mix are moments with Henri, a member of the French branch of the family as well as Otto, Greta’s brother, in Austria and then in England when he comes to visit. Albert’s brother, Clement, also features somewhat prominently for a while but then inexplicably gets relegated to the background until he almost disappears.Solomons interjects with a subplot about Karl, a beggar boy who eventually connects with one of the Goldbaums to show that war doesn’t care about bank balances; it devastates anyone. While Karl’s story offers a mild distraction from the other plot points, it doesn’t enhance the overall book. In fact, had Karl not been in the novel, the book wouldn’t have suffered in any way.The biggest challenge for readers will be the scope of the novel. They may wonder exactly what it is Solomons wants her target audience to glean from the book. An insipid end that brings the Goldbaums to two years before the end of World War I doesn’t offer any answers. The Goldbaums find themselves limping along in their every-day lives to survive the financial and emotional toll of the war, and readers who stick with the story to the end will find themselves frustrated with the lackluster conclusion.Those interested in historical fiction might find House of Gold interesting. Otherwise, I recommend readers Bypass it.

This book is wonderfully put together, and while the information could be a bit hard to digest for some, I think it be really useful as a resource for writing.The book covers a lot more of the philosophy of alchemy than the actual methods if I remember correctly, but that's perfect for what I got the book for, which was so I could slip little alchemic references into my writing.

The pictures are of great quality and the writing is superb, but the book binding is terrible. First, as you open the pages (mostly on the black pages) you will hear a tearing sound. This is the pages tearing from the sewing and glue. You will notice holes from the bottom of the page to the top where the pages meet the spine. Second, the bookmark ribbon is textured and leaves a nasty imprint on the pages. It would have been better if they had not sewn the ribbon in to begin with.As a book collector, I am less than impressed. If I had the money to get the Easton Press edition, I would. In the meantime, this one is going back. Taschen, you could do better.Best,Bruce

An excellent book about Alchemy and Mysticism, maybe the best...

Very nice book, wish it were bigger though.

I spent a long time trying to figure out which version of this book (short, medium, or full version, basically) I would get. There has been a lot of confusion in these reviews, what with Amazon combining reviews for specific versions together and people leaving their review for the wrong version, and some of the versions being removed from Amazon, creating one jumbled commentary. Here are the two main versions I found:Version 1) FULL VERSIONPaperback: 712 pages $165.00 new $45.00 usedPublisher: Taschen (May 1, 1997)Product Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.4 x 2.1 inchesVersion 2) SHORTENED VERSIONPaperback: 575 pages $12.37 newPublisher: Taschen; 25th edition (August 2, 2006)Product Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.6 x 1.8 inchesI decided to go all out and get the full version, but at the used price. I have to say I was a bit disappointed, while the book is packed with fascinating information and images, I never thought to look at the size dimensions of this mammoth 712 page book before buying: 8 inches long! Basically just an inch or two larger than my hand's length. Think: the size of a guide book. I was so looking forward to this book largely for the artwork it has, which shows fine lines and details. But alas, most of the images aren't full page but half-page size, so imagine how small they actually are in a 8x6 inch book! Honestly, I felt the book, for my purposes, was not worth the $45.00 USED price. I was picturing a large coffee table sized book where I could pour over the artwork, rather than something of a pocketguide. Knowing how small the artwork and text is, I wish I would have only spent $12.37 and sacrificed the 200 pages for the sake of my wallet.I would recommend getting one of the two versions to anyone fascinated by spiritualism, symbology, archetypes, art from 1300s-1600s, and myth/folklore/magic.

There is so much info in this book. Many illustrations as well
